September 22, 2004:
Liza decides to leave Pine Valley.

[At Tad's. Tad opens the door. It's Liza.]

Liza: Look, just keep an open mind and try to answer the question honestly. Do you know where Adam is?

Tad: Well, the words "beyond redemption" spring to mind.

Liza: All right. [She walks in. Tad closes the door.]

Tad: And it doesn't look like you're in the mood for joking.

Liza: Look, I know I've given you a million and one reasons to hate me, but I need to find him. Babe is not the only one battling the Chandlers for the good of her child.

Tad: As much as I would love to take the credit for ridding the planet of Adam Chandler, I believe the honor goes to David Hayward.

Liza: What did David do? I mean, should church bells be pealing? Should there be rejoicing throughout the land?

Tad: You mean, is it permanent? The answer's I don't know.

Liza: Hmm. [She turns way from Tad, pensive.]

Tad: Well, what do you care? You and Adam have already done the custody cha-cha over Colby, haven't you?

Liza: Yeah. You know what? [She turns back to face Tad.] We settled out of court. And then I walked in on Adam and JR setting up Babe.

Tad: Oh, so now Adam is using Colby to blackmail you?

Liza: Yeah. If I don't keep my mouth shut, then he's going to legally sue me for my own child.

Tad: Well, he can't... he... [Liza looks at him pointedly.] ...okay.

Liza: Yeah, he can give it the old college try. You know, in Adam's contact book, there are two types of judges -- honest and "in my pocket." Guess which list is longer.

Tad: So if he does the dishonest thing, you can just appeal.

Liza: Right, I can appeal until the day I die. In the meantime, what kind of person is Colby going to become?

Tad: Probably a lot like JR -- fought over, lied to, torn in half. Not a pretty picture.

Liza: You know, unless Adam stays gone, I might as well just do exactly what he wants.

Tad: Well, you know something? Under Adam's thumb might be just exactly where you belong, because you're the one that started this when you told JR that Babe never got that annulment from Paul Cramer.

Liza: You're right. It's all my fault.

Liza: [She sits down.] I, uh, never would have believed that the fallout would endanger an innocent child -- two innocent children.

Tad: No. You were too busy trying to nail the oh-so-guilty Babe -- and Krystal and me.

Liza: Krystal...

Tad: Careful, Liza, two words -- "thin ice."

Liza: I just thought that if Babe went running off into the sunset, that her loving mother would follow. I deserve every shred of hatred you feel right now.

Tad: Hmm. "Hate the sin, not the sinner."

Liza: I'm sorry?

Tad: Oh, it's just one of those bumper stickers that Opal used to mumble, you know, to me and Jenny when we were kids, usually before she did something heinous. "I don't hate you, but what you did --"

Liza: Yeah, after everything I've done. I mean, look what it's gotten me -- absolutely nothing. [She half-laughs.] I could have clued Babe in to JR's real agenda, and Jamie wouldn't have been stabbed. I have to be the dumbest woman that's ever lived -- had a child with Adam, divorced him, still thought I could live in his zip code for all of eternity. [She stands up and walks towards Tad.]

Tad: Well, they've got a zip code in Hell?

Liza: It's just -- you know, it's impossible. There is no peaceful co-existence with a Chandler. You know, if Babe actually thinks that this reconciliation with JR is going to last, well, boy, you know, she's going to be in for it later.

Tad: No, she won't be, because neither Jamie or I is going to let them get to Babe or Bess.

Liza: Well, Babe is very lucky to have you -- you and Krystal. Lucky.

Tad: Liza, I've got something to tell you. [He hesitates.] I proposed to Krystal.

Liza: [She smiles sadly.] Well, it's -- it's, it's okay. I mean, this is just something that's sneaking up and biting me. You know, I encouraged you to find love after you were grieving for Dixie. I just never really thought it would be Krystal, but -- [She half-laughs.]

Tad: It was good advice, and I'm grateful.

Liza: Yeah, I want you to be happy. I'm just sorry.

Tad: That it's not the two of us being happy together.

Liza: Look, you know what? You and I, we tried it every which way over the years. We were friends and enemies, lovers, friends... enemies.

Tad: You think we could back up a bit to friends?

Liza: [She looks at him.] We could if you were willing.

Tad: I'm already there. [He kisses her cheek.]

Liza: Hmm. Thanks. Well, you know I can't leave it like this. I have to do something.

Tad: Oh, Liza, I don't know. I think at this point you should just leave it alone.

Liza: No, I need to do something with my life. I can't just walk around in Adam's minefields. And Colby? I mean, look at JR he came back a whole new person when he was overseas, and look what Adam's been able to do to him in less than a year! I am not going to let him warp Colby. I just -- I couldn't live with myself.

Tad: Wait a minute. You're not -- you're not really thinking of --

Liza: Why not?

Tad: Well --

Liza: I mean, it makes sense.

Tad: But it's a big step.

Liza: Yeah. I've taken those before.

Tad: Under these circumstances?

Liza: Don't you think it's time for me to honestly and clearly evaluate my life? I mean, where I am and why? What I can and can't have? I mean, think about it. Think about where I could be and what I could have if I just made a few changes.

Tad: Well, I'm on your side. No matter what you do, you got my support.

Liza: [She smiles a real smile.] Well, look at me -- down but almost invincible.

Tad: [He smiles, then it fades.] You let me know what you need and when you need it.

Liza: [She nods, her voice softer] You'll be the first person I call. [She looks at him and smiles.]
