April 30, 1997:
Liza tears into Tad after her break-up with Jake.

[On Tad's terrace, after Jake has left. Liza is sobbing. Tad sees her from inside and comes out. Her back is to him.]

Tad: Liza? What are you doing here? [Liza tries to calm herself.] You know if you're waiting for Jake, I think he's on the boat.

Liza: No, I'm not waiting for Jake.

Tad: What'd you do, get a job selling door to door?

Liza: Shut up, just shut up.

Tad: You're never going to get a sale with an attitude like that.

Liza: This is all your fault.

Tad: What, that you're sitting on my terrace in the middle of the night?

Liza: Jake and I, uh, we, uh, we're over so don't even bother to act surprised.

Tad: Oh. Oh. Well, Liza, for what it's worth, I just want you to know that I'm--

Liza: It's worth nothing, Tad. It's worth nothing.

Tad: I'm sorry. Here. Have a shot. [He pours champagne into a glass and sets it in front of her.] You okay?

Liza: You don't care about me. Is that for Gloria or your next victim?

Tad: What's that supposed to mean?

Liza: You couldn't stand to see me happy, so you and the rest of the holier than thou Martin clan poisoned Jake's mind against me.

Tad: Oh, yeah, we destroyed a perfectly good track record.

Liza: Uh-huh. So you can just tell them they won, okay? Ruth and your mother and everybody. Misery has no company. Liza ends up alone and with nothing, as usual. I'm sure Opal will be hollerin' at the mountains. Hallelujah. The witch got what's coming to her.

Tad: Well, at least you're in attack mode, that's a good sign.

Liza: You still blame me for Dixie. And you know what? You were there, too, pal. You were just as much to blame as I was.

Tad: Wait just a second. You've got to be kidding. Come on. You honestly think I sit around at night trying to come up with ways to even the score? You're dead wrong.

Liza: Don't bother denying it.

Tad: Liza, there's nothing to deny! I didn't do anything. Look, okay, fine, I screwed up my life. You screwed up yours. You're the one who chose to marry Adam Chandler. There's nothing I could possibly come up with that's going to kick that.

Liza: Was it Jake, that he, that he beat you at your own game?

Tad: Liza, you're still not on that, are you?

Liza: Tad, you don't like coming in second.

Tad: Liza, look, okay. [He points to the champagne tray.] Take a good look. I am happy. As far as I'm concerned it's live and let live, and whether you want to believe it or not, I have moved on.

Liza: I hope Nurse Marsh knows what she's gotten herself into. Why don't you run upstairs and promise her forever. Maybe you can even invent a few lines that you haven't said before. Pepper them with wit. And she'll be right there for you. You can promise to be the true and loyal fiancé, and then graduate to the true and loyal husband. But then one day you'll look up and there'll be a fantasy in black heels. Forbidden fruit in a power suit. And no matter how much you love Gloria, one late ordinary night Florence Nightingale is going to be doing the late shift and you're going to step up to bat, and the rest we all know about. One more free fall from grace. How many does that make? Gee, I think I've lost count. One more tortured female soul cuts her teeth in loving Tad Martin. Kick in the heart when the laughter stops. I'll tell you what. I'll toast then. I'll toast when you're exactly where I am at right now. Look at me, 'cause I'm nowhere. [She leaves.]

Tad: Stop by any time, Liza.
