Episode 1: Breaking up is hard to do.

Tad's living room. Time: early night.

Tad and Jamie are picking up after themselves.

Jamie: Dad, can I be a pilot when I grow up?

Tad: I don't know about that, James. Your mother might have some other idea... I thought you wanted to be a fireman?

Jamie: No, I wanted to be an astronaut. Fireman is kids' stuff.

Tad: We'll talk about this when you're older, all right? Now let's do this, we've got to get you to bed so you'll be ready for school tomorrow...

Jamie: Do I have to???

Door bell rings.

Jamie: I'll get it! (Jamie quickly forgets about cleaning up the room and runs to the door to open it)

Liza is at the door, crying.

Liza: Jamie? Hi, is your dad there?

Jamie (screaming): Dad! It's your boss! (Liza enters the house, trying to hide her tears from Jamie)

Tad (laughing): Well thank you, son. (quickly realizing that Liza is upset) Jamie, time for you to get ready for bed, OK? Go.... I'll go check on you in a few minutes.

Jamie: Oh! all right! Good night. (runs out of the room)

Tad: You don't look so good.

Liza: I left him.

Tad: Again????

Liza: Adam lied to me. Corview. TransGlobal. I almost lost my baby because of him, and he kept on lying....

Tad: You're upset. Your hormones are flying all over the place...

Liza: (interrupting): He could have killed my daughter!

Tad: But he didn't. And he certainly didn't mean to...

Liza: Why are you defending him? He lied to me and he killed all those people on flight 149. I'm supposed to forget about that?

Tad: Just don't go over board with this! Calm down. (Tad sits her down)

Liza: You know what? Now, he's asking me to pull the plug on the show. Pull the plug on our exclusive!

Tad: Will you?

Liza: No! The same principals I talked about when Brooke when gonzo apply to Adam. (Tad hands her a kleenex) He talked of loyalty!! Loyalty?!? He lies to me for months and now, he wants loyalty? I'm going to nail his ass to the ceiling! How can I be so naive? Trusting Adam Chandler? God, he could have killed my child!

Tad: Hey, you weren't naive! You're his wife, you love him.

Liza: Loved. Past tense.

Tad: No matter. I don't want you to blame yourself for this, OK? Now....What are you going to do about this?

Liza: What I'm supposed to do if the owner of TransGlobal Airline was a complete stranger: expose the fraud! The show is on, tomorrow. Will you help me?

Tad: Are you sure you want to do this? I mean he is your baby's father. How will Coco feel when she finds out her mother basically destroyed her old man for journalistic principals?

Liza: Much better when she'll find out that it saved her life. Can I count on you?(Liza takes the phone and dials).

Tad: Of course! What are you doing?

Liza: Distancing myself from that monster...

Tad: Don't do any thing rash!

Liza: (to the phone) Belinda? Hi, I'm sorry to call you this late (pause, listening) I want to start divorce procedures....(Tad throws his hands in the air while Liza pauses to listen) NO! as in NOW!

Later that evening, Tad & Liza are still working in his living room.

Liza is up on her feet, pacing, tossing ideas left and right while Tad is getting tired but smiling, admiring her strength. For a moment, he notices her naked feet walking their little hearts out and wonders how they would feel under his hands, he snaps out of it.

Tad: Stop that!

Liza: What?

Tad: That pacing! Geez Liza! Can't a guy catch his breathe?

Liza: I just started.

Tad: I know, I'm getting dizzy just sitting here. I think we should get a break, if only for my sanity. And that poor baby must be tired.

Liza: Actually, she's been kicking away tonight.

Tad: Maybe she's complaining about the noisy neighborhood? Or maybe she's trying to get some zzz and her mother can't seem to calm down. Sit!

Liza suddenly notices Tad's tired eyes as she sits down next to him.

Liza: I'm sorry.

Tad: Good, she finally sits.

Liza: Now I'm hungry.

Tad: Hungry? You just ate a whole pizza, with anchovies.

Liza: And olives.

Tad: Yah.

Liza: You know what?

Tad: What?

Liza: I could kill for an hamburger, with the works.
Tad: The works?

Liza: Cucumbers, mayo, tomatoes, mushrooms and ...

Tad: Anchovies.

Liza: How did you know?

Tad: Honey, for the last 3 hours you ate everything in this house with anchovies, including that dreadful carrot cake. YUCK! How do you do this????

Liza: Does McKay's deliver at this hour?

Tad looks at his watch and is totally surprised.

Tad: Whoa! Is that the time? Liza, we got to put a stop to this. I'm going to look like hell tomorrow if we don't get some sleep?

Liza: You're right, you're right... I should go, the Valley Inn.....

Tad (Interrupting): Forget the Valley Inn, you're going to stay in my guess room for the time being! (Liza protests) No, no I insist, as a matter of fact, I asked Jamie to get all his toys out of that room before he went to bed, so you have no choice, all right?

Liza: (flashes a smile): All right. (she gets up with some difficulty, and help from Tad) What did I do to deserve you? (they hug for a few seconds, for a moment Liza feels Tad holding on a little longer).

Tad: Not much (smiles). Now, get yourself and the little one upstairs, get some rest. It's the first room on the right.

Liza: I will. We will. Thanks (Liza takes her little suitcase and heads for the stairs as Tad looks on with a smile on his face, for a moment he considers the fact that he's happy with Liza in his home).

Episode 2: Mother knows best?

Tad's living room. Early the next morning.

Liza is pacing and talking on the phone, with a glass of orange juice in her hand. She's in a rotten mood.

Liza: Rudy! You have my notes, don't you? (pause, listening) then just follow them! I'm very clear about this, OK? We are going to get on the air today with this story. Has legal looked at it yet? (pause, listening) OK, well as soon as they do, let me know... no, better yet tell them to call me ASAP. Now, what else is on the agenda? (pause, drinks her juice, listening) Perfect, tell them they'll have to wait... this story is too big for us to let go. (pause, listening) Yes, I'm sure! (pause, listening) Iris? OK well, transfer me. (waits looking at her papers) Hi, Iris, yes, what's new? (pause and then sighs, she feels a headache coming on) Oh! I forgot about that! Is there any way to put it off? Yes, I know, 7 months yaddy-yaddy-yadda. When is this class starting tonight? It will be fine... (to herself) I guess I'll just have to find a last minute coach.... no nothing. Thank you, Iris, for reminding me. OK, is that all? (Door bell rings) OK, well I have to go... I'll see you later, all right? Bye. (to the door) Coming!

Liza opens the door to find Marian.

Liza: Mother? Now I really have a headache.

Marian: Liza, have you completely lost your mind?

Liza (walking away): Short answer: No. You can leave now, mother. And I guess I should tell you, I'm now on the market for a house, a small one, you know three bed rooms, nothing big for me and my daughter, maybe a garden. If you want the contract, it's yours.

Marian: Oh please, darling, do not dismiss me like that.

Liza: Wish I could, mother.

Marian: I just came from Adam's and he is devastated. You left him, just like that?

Liza: I see Adam might have skip a few items in his story.

Marian: What's that suppose to mean? He loves you, Liza.

Liza: He loves me so much that he lied to me all this time about almost killing my child! (Liza looks around for a way out)

Marian: What are you talking about? Adam would never hurt you.

Liza: Really? (finally facing Marian head-on)

Marian: Really, darling.

Liza: Mother, he was the owner of TransGlobal, when I almost lost my baby. He lied, and lied and lied again. When you felt so guilty about taking me on that plane, he let you take the heat, when in fact, HE was the one responsible. He played Hayley, and you and myself for suckers.

Marian: But he loves you, that's why...

Liza (getting agitated): No. He loves himself. And possibly a reproduction of himself. Well, I'm not going to be a part of this anymore. And I am going to expose him for the monster he really is. (Liza turns her back when she feels she can't hold her tears much longer)

Marian: Liza, I....

Jamie: Hi.

Liza: Mother, I'm not going to discuss this anymore, I have a job to do. Please....

Marian: I'm not finished.

Liza: Yes, you are. Please, leave.

Marian gets out the door.

Jamie: Are you fighting with your mom?

Liza: No. We have disagreements.

Jamie: She's kinda weird.

Liza: You don't know the half of it, kid.

Jamie: Dad wants to know if you want some more breakfast. He said it was good for you and the baby.

Liza: That's sweet but no, I'm fine.

Jamie: OK! (Jamie starts to head for the kitchen and then turns around)... Can I ask you a question?

Liza: Sure.

Jamie: How did that baby get into your belly?

Liza: What? (trying to restrain a laugh)

Jamie: Dad says there's a baby-girl in your belly, but how did she get there?

Liza: I think you should ask your daddy...

Jamie (interrupting): Can I touch your belly?

Liza: Sure. Here (Liza sits him down as she puts his little hand on her belly, looking for the right spot) She usually puts on a show at this time. (they both wait a few seconds and then the baby kicks and Jamie is stunned)

Jamie: Whoa! It's like that movie, Aliens or something!

Liza (laughing): Well, not quite.

Jamie: How did she get in there?

Tad looks on with a smile on his face.

Tad (interrupting): Jamie, have you washed your teeth yet? Your ride will be here any minutes.

Jamie (annoyed): All right, all right...(Jamie runs off and then stops in his tracks) (to Liza) Are you going to be here tonight?

Tad: Yes, she will (Liza is surprised). And for a while.

Jamie: Cool! (Jamie heads out to his room)

Tad: Looks like you impressed him!

Liza: For a while?

Tad: I insist.

Liza: We'll see. But thanks for saving me from embarrassing questions.

Tad looks at her, puzzled.

Liza: He asked how did the baby get here. (she points to her belly)

Tad (big smile): With great difficulty.

Liza: What?

Tad: That would have been my answer. (Liza pokes him in the arm) Sorry (laughing)... God, I got to talk to that kid about the birds and the bees now (he grimaces)! I was hoping he would pick it up in the street (grins). What's the world coming to when a father has to talk to his son about sex?

Outside a car honks away.

Tad: Jamie, your ride is here!

Jamie comes down running, kisses his dad and heads out.

Jamie: Bye dad, bye Liza!

Tad: Remember, your mother will be picking you up after school!... (to Liza as he closes the door) Now, where were we?

Liza: The birds and the bees.

Tad: (grimaces) Well, maybe later...

Liza: Actually I mean now... I need you to do me a favor.

Tad: Sure, anything.

Liza: Lamaze.

Tad: I heard of it.

Liza: Tonight... there's this class... It's kinda my last chance to get into one before...., and as you know I just dumped my coach.... so I was wondering if you...

Tad: Tonight?

Liza: Yeah. I mean if it's not too much trouble.

Tad: No trouble at all. I'd love to. I would be honored. But what about Marian, did she decline?

Liza: No. I didn't ask. I figured she would be after me the whole time, you know, pleading for Adam's case. I just can't deal with that, not at this time.

Tad: I understand.

Liza: I knew you would. You always do.

Tad and Liza share a hug only to be interrupted by a little jolt.

Tad (laughing, pulling back and looking at her belly): I don't believe this! She kicked me!

Liza: Actually, she kicked ME. You, she likes. She always calms down when she hears your voice.

Tad: She does? (Liza nods) Cool! The kid's got good taste... Now, let's get some breakfast in you before we head for the station....

Episode 3: The pay back

The Cutting Edge Studio. The crew and Tad are ending the taping of the show.

Tad (at the camera lens): The question left is: why is corporate greed more important than public safety?... For The Cutting Edge, I'm Tad Martin.

Rudy (with headphones on): And...Cut! That's a rap. Good work, people, the phones are ringing off the hook!

Tad gets up from his chair and walks to Rudy.

Tad: Did you see her?

Rudy: No. I was kinda surprised, she's usually right on top of these things. Especially, the nuclear bomb shows. Excuse me...(Rudy runs off)

Tad (to himself): Yeah, well, I guess it's not every day you get to blow up your own marriage right on the air.

Belinda walks right to Tad. She's been in the studio during the whole taping of the show.

Belinda: That was very thorough.

Tad (looking around for Liza): Well you know Liza, *very thorough* is her middle name.

Belinda: How is she?

Tad: I don't know. I haven't seen her since we drove in this morning. She didn't show up for the taping. Definitely not like her. I'm kind of worried actually. It's all very calculated and cold. A little too calculated and cold.

Belinda: Well, her strategy is sound. Adam will be so busy on the lawsuits front, I don't think he can even dream about fighting the divorce and the custody.

Tad: And what's new on your front?

Belinda: Adam should have receive those divorce papers right about now.

Tad: And a nice little divorce chaser right after the show that ruins you. Ouch! You know if Adam Chandler wasn't such a manipulative jerk, I might feel sorry for the guy. Actually, I think Liza is letting him off easy. Did she change her mind? She's still not asking for any money?

Belinda: Yes, and against my better judgment. And legal advice. And I don't feel sorry for Adam Chandler.

Tad: What about you? You were getting pretty close to that Christopher guy, weren't you?

Belinda (ignoring the question): How was she today, really?

Tad: You've got to work on those segues, Lindy! (smile).... Like I said I'm not sure. She had a talk with Marian this morning. That can't be good? She seems very focus on the baby. And the station, her other baby. She's determined, I can say that.

Belinda: It's a tough break up.

Tad: I'll say. But I can't say I'm not relieved.

Belinda: Why is that?

Tad: Adam Chandler is no man to be married to. Believe me, I know.

Belinda: You tried to talked her out of this marriage, didn't you?

Tad: Long ago.... For the good, it did. (sigh) Timing was never Liza's and mine *forte*. Ever since we were ten, our timing has always been horrific (sad smile).

Liza's office.

Liza is at her desk. She's going thru papers, mindlessly. She told Iris hours ago to hold all her calls. She hasn't seen Tad's show. She knows it by heart and trusts Tad to put it together as planned. She didn't want to see it, afraid that she might chicken out. She's reading back those same papers, she can't concentrate and keeps flashing back to her life with Adam and her discovery of his lies.

Flashback scenes:

Liza is sitting in her hospital bed when Tad pops in.

Tad: Are you up for a visitor and maybe some flowers?

Liza: Tad? Hi, come in! They're lovely. (Tad walks close to her bed and gives her a hug and a kiss on the cheek).

Tad: (handing over the flowers) They're for both of you. You and little CoCo are OK? I was worried. I mean, (feeling self-conscious) *we* were worried.

Liza: Yes, well it was a close call but we're doing fine. Thanks. How are things at the station?

Tad: You know me, when the cat is away etc. etc. etc.: one orgy after another (smile). No, seriously, everyone is really pumped up. We're going to get those bastards, Liza. That stupid airline is not going to know what hit it!

Flashback: Later that month, Liza and Tad are at a computer looking through confidential files of the Corview corporation.

Liza: I didn't know you were a wiz-hacker?

Tad: One of the advantages of living with a six year old and not having a life, one gets to be computer-literate. (Liza laughs while Tad computes) And also an experience as a PI is a major plus for snooping around. You know, I was quite good at that, you should have seen me way-back-when, young and stupid. Not to be immodest, but I was a great PI. Unfortunately, clients were a rare breed. (Liza looks at him wishing she had seen him in those days)..... There! I got it! Welcome to Corview's ownership....

Liza: Is this illegal?

Tad: Oh... Absolutely!

Later....

Tad sees something disturbing.

Tad: That can't be.

Liza: What?

Tad: No, I'm wrong.

Liza: Wrong? Wrong about what? Tell me!

Tad: Liza, according to this file, Adam owned Corview. Since last spring up until last month.

Liza is shocked.

Flashback: In Adam's office.

Adam: (looking for a way out): You're mistaken.

Liza: How long before you were going to tell me, Adam? Huh? Or were you waiting to get it right the next time?????

Adam: Liza, I love you. You don't mean that....

Liza (interrupting): Shut up! Just shut up! You don't know the meaning of the word love. I don't know you. It's over.

End of Flashbacks.

Mad as hell, Liza takes the cup on her desk and throws it on the wall.

Liza (to herself): YOU IDIOT!!!!! (takes her head in her hands and starts to cry)

A knock at the door startles Liza.

Tad: Hi, mind if I come in or is it a bad time?

Liza (wiping away her tears, trying not to show her emotions that he notices right away): No, come on in.

Tad: So? Anything new? ( he sits down, looking straight into her eyes but sensing that she's uncomfortable)

Liza (lies): Budgets....

Tad (looking away): Oh!... Speaking of which I meant to tell you, TCE will need more money for the show about on grade school teachers?

Liza (exasperated, her mind is clear again): What on earth for?

Tad (sensing the energy): No, come on! You promised me a bigger budget for this month's shows, and that's one of them?

Liza: Tad, as much as it is an important subject, no one is going to watch that damn school teacher show, and I'm not going to allow any increase in the budget for that graveyard in the ratings war!

Tad: You promised!

Liza (getting mad): Unless you have this so-called promise in writing or on tape, the answer is NO! And frankly, even if you did have any proof, the answer would still be NO! You're lucky I'm letting you do the damn show, period.

Tad: Give me a break, Liza, the show is a winner!

Liza: In PollyAnnaLand maybe!

Tad: What about my guest list?

Liza: Well I guess, you know where to put it now, don't you?!?! (Liza stops, realizing what's happening) Thank you!

Tad (playing innocent): What?????

Liza (smiles): For trying to make me forget. But I don't need this... I'm fine.

Tad: So, you want to go and eat something before we head for that class or shall we go there straight away?

Liza: The class!! Lamaze! I forgot. Again. You'd think I would remember those types of things, (pointing at her belly) she's been fussing all day. She knows something is up. (looking at her watch) We have to get there now.

Tad: Come on!

Liza gets up from behind her desk with Tad's help and gives him a hug.

Tad: Ready? (Liza nods)

Tad and Liza get out of her office as they close the door.

Tad: Now, about that budget....?

Liza: The answer is still NO! (fade to black)

Episode 4: The class

[Editor's note: Gloria Marsh-Marick is separated from Dimitri, after the couple lost custody of Maddie and Dim's low dealings came to surface. Also Holidays is no longer owned by Hayley and Matt Santos - Hayley is mad at Adam and not speaking to him, Skye also left PV when WRCW revealed that she had temper with Maddie's paternity test. Jacob Foster of The City (played by Darnell Williams, formerly Jesse Hubbard) bought the bar and renamed it: Jacob's LADder. His wife, Dr Angie Hubbard (played by Debbi Morgan) is back in her hometown and working at PV Hospital. Jacob quickly became one of Tad's best friends and is a good friend of Liza's.]

We begin at PV Hospital, the nurses' station on the Ob-Gyn wing in the early evening. Nurse Marsh is at the desk.

Liza walks in alone, looking around for the classroom, hesitating. Finally, as the last resort, she approaches Glo.

Liza: I'm sorry. I'm can't seem to find tonight's Lamaze class, they told me room 401 but it's not there...

Gloria (rudely): I thought you top-notch journalistic type knew everything???

Liza: Excuse me?

Gloria: Oh please, don't play innocent with me, you haven't been innocent since you were 6.

Liza: I just want to know where the class is.

Gloria: How could you do this to him?

Liza: Who?

Gloria: Adam. You made a fool out of him with this bastard baby and now you're trying to ruin him with those false accusations.

Liza: I don't have to defend myself to you.

Gloria: Adam is my friend.

Liza: And you're such a good judge of character, aren't you Mrs Marick or are we back to Marsh now that the Hungarian cat is out of the bag?

Tad walks in the nurses' station and gets to Liza. He ignores Glo.

Tad: Liza! I found it. Let's go, we don't want to be late. I hear the teacher is quite peeved. She might put this on the kid's permanent record (Liza giggles) and bang! little Coco can't get into Yale!

Tad takes Liza by the shoulders and walks away as Glo, defeated and ignored, looks on.

Tad and Liza enter the classroom. They're the very last couple to come in. A very strict looking nurse greets them (played by Helen Gallagher).

Nurse Harris: Good evening. I'm nurse Harris and welcome to Lamaze. May I have your registration papers?

Liza: Hi. Oh, yes (looking thru her purse) it's in here, somewhere.

Tad: Nurse Harris, I thought you retired?

Nurse Harris I have. This is just something to keep me busy. I'm a volunteer. Do I know you?

Tad: Tad Martin.

He offers a hand, Nurse Harris ignores it. Nurse Harris looks slightly confused.

Tad: Dr Martin's son? We haven't met since... gosh, I was 14. My father always speaks very highly of you.

NH (coldly): How nice.

Liza (still looking in her purse): There it is! (she hands her the fold-up paper)

NH (looking at it): You forgot to sign it.

Liza: Oh I did? I'm forgetful these days, sorry.

Nurse Harris We can't have that (looking at the paper for the name) Mrs.... Colby. Babies need attention and forgetfulness is totally inappropriate behavior.

T (teasing Liza): There! Told ya! Her permanent record is all messed up. (Liza giggles)

Nurse Harris: This is not a laughing matter, Mr Martin. You and your wife are in for a great deal of trouble.

Liza: Oh we're not married. He's not the father...

Tad: Yes. we're just friends....

NH (interrupting): I'm not interested in your private lives. I just want to make sure that this baby and the others in this class have a safe and healthy start.

Tad: Yes, m'am.

NH (sternly): You can take your place now, you're holding up the class.

L (going down to a small mattress with Tad): Sorry...(to Tad) Why does Nurse Harris remind me of someone?

NH (to the class): Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the PVH Lamaze class. You are about to welcome to this world a brand new life. I am presuming since you are here, you want to do this right.....

L (whispering): Does she?

Nurse Harris.... I want to make one thing sure: labor and giving birth are no walk in the park, in fact they are two of the most painful experiences ....

T (whispering): You don't see the resemblance?

L (whispering): Should I?

Nurse Harris: ....But I am sure that you will forget this pain as soon as you hold your baby in your arms, most of you will in any case....

Tad (whispering): 7th grade? Miss Crabapple?

Liza (still whispering, trying not to laugh): Miss Crabapple!

Tad (whispering): She's her sister.

Liza (turning to Tad): You're kidding????

Nurse Harris (stopping her speech cold and talking directly to Tad and Liza): Is there something you want to share with the rest of the class, Miss Colby??? (all heads turn to Liza and Tad)

Liza (feeling like she's 12 again): No, M'am. (Liza elbows Tad in the stomach, whispering) Now, you got me in trouble with the teacher.

Tad laughs it off.

An hour later, Tad and Liza walks into Jacob's LADder for a late dinner and quickly get a table.

Jacob: If it isn't the good folks at WRCW? In from a late working session?

Liza: Lamaze class.

Tad: The little one needs attention.

Jacob: Cool. You want the full menu?

Liza: I know exactly what I want, I want a giant chocolate milkshake, very thick, and huge hamburger with the works, including...

Jacob and Tad (at the same time): Anchovies.

Liza: Am I getting predictable?

Jacob: And Thaddeus?

Tad: Something light. Some of that soup du jour?

Jacob: Gotcha! (goes away to the kitchen)

Liza: I can't believe that nurse. I felt like a 12 years old.

Tad: Of course, you did. I remember that time when you got into trouble with Mrs Crabapple.

Liza: That was all because of you, you made me do this. It was all your fault!

Tad: Oh come on!

Liza: No, really I was quietly sitting there, minding my own business and you had to make that stupid remark, and that's when I laughed.

Tad: Now come on, I had to do something.

Liza: Excuse me?

Tad: Come on? The prettiest, brightest girl in school? I just had to do something! You only had eyes for Greg Nelson. It was very frustrating. But it worked, didn't it?

Liza: A week in detention??? Oh yeah, it worked.

Tad: Well as long as you noticed.... (Tad wants to take her hands but decides against it, a few seconds of silence sets in)

Liza: I asked my mother to find me a house, for the baby and me. And as soon as it's possible I'll get out of your hair and move out of your guest room.

Tad: Move out???? No, absolutely not. (Liza looks surprised) I mean I want you to stay at Casa Martin up until Coco is born. I won't have it any other way.

Liza: But Jamie....

Tad: Jamie is fine and I got lots of space, and no, you are not imposing. Come on, Liza. You can have your full privacy and if you feel a little lonely you could join the Jamester and I, anytime. It's perfect. And as long as you live in my house, Marian and Adam won't bother you too much. And when you go into labor in the middle of the night, I will be right there.

Liza: I can't ask you that.

Tad: You're not asking, I'm offering. Please.

Liza smiles.

Afterwards: at Tad's, Tad and Liza are going to their respective room, each room facing the other. They're standing in the hallway.

Tad (feeling like he's on a first date): Home sweet home.

Liza (feeling the same way): Yes....(tension-filled pause). Tad, thank you. This could have been the most miserable day of my life, but you turned it into something funny and warm. And you helped me focus back on the important stuff.

Tad: Like Miss Crabapple....

Liza (laughing): Something like that, thank you. I have the very best friend in the world.

She comes closer to Tad and kisses him on the cheek tenderly, he hugs her, closing his eyes, wishing deep down for more but not making a move. She pulls back, a smile on her face. He slowly caresses her cheek, hesitating, wanting to kiss her but holding back.

Tad: You have a good night.

Liza: Good Night.

She turns back and gets inside her room, closing the door behind her. Her back is against the door as she reflects on her day, smiling. In the hallway, Tad moves closer to Liza's door, almost knocking on the door but he changes his mind at the last moment. He goes to his room head down, closing the door.

Episode 5: After glo

Tad's living room. Morning.

Liza is all dressed up and ready to go to work. She's now 8 months pregnant and huge. She's sitting on the couch and talking on the phone, she's getting increasingly uncomfortable. Her back hurts and the baby has been fussing. Still, she's trying to be diplomatic.

Liza (grimaces): Henry, I understand. Look, your bank has been great with us. And you know, this is a cyclical business (she pauses, listening, desperately trying to get up). Huh-huh, no, I agree. (she finally does pull herself up, starts pacing) I agree (rolls her eyes). Absolutely, I appreciate that, Henry. I really do.... (holding her back)

Tad walks into the room watching Liza do business on the phone, he can't take his eyes off her and smiles.

Tad (to himself): Look at her! God, she's beautiful!

Liza (still on the phone): I agree, Henry and you know that I like the way you think (she turns and sees Tad staring at her, she rolls her eyes to him as he smiles).

Tad (to himself): And smart too. Scary smart.

Liza (to the phone): Great. No, I like it. Thank you, Henry, really. Good bye. (she hangs up the phone, exasperated) I can't believe this guy!!!!

Tad can see that her back is bugging her, he goes straight to her to massage it. Her back muscles oozes under his hands and her perfume is driving him crazy. He tries to ignore it.

Tad (rubbing her shoulder): Henry? Hank, the bank. That Henry?

Liza: Oh that's good, right there. Yes, Henry from the bank. Henry was reminding me of my obligations. Like I could forget them!

Tad: (still massaging, concentrating on the lower back) How's that? (she nods) That's new, putting pressure about the loan?

Liza: Ever so slightly, ha! this is nice. Mmmmm... (pause, enjoying the massage). A little pressure. But pressure is still pressure. A little to the left. Good. (his touch feels very soft, slowly, she feels herself swept away, melting under his hands)

Tad: But everything is fine, right? (feeling her body relaxing, Tad has the urge to kiss her neck but he resists)

Liza: Absolutely. But...

Tad: I smell an Adam....

Liza: Me too.

The door bell rings. Tad & Liza are relieved and frustrated at the same time. The massage stops as Liza goes to answer the door. Gloria is there, looking sheepish.

Liza: Gloria?! Eh?.... Hi. (Liza looks over to Tad and notices a sad look in his eyes, which fills her with rage against Glo. Tad gives a slight nod to Liza) Come in, please.

Gloria: I'm sorry, I should have called.

Liza: No (looking at Tad for some kind of answer), heh, I have to get my breakfast, excuse me.

Tad's eyes follow Liza, wishing she would stay.

Gloria: (making awkward small talk) Liza looks good, healthy. I still can't believe that she is going to be a mother. Is she going to put the baby right away in daycare? She works so many hours.

Tad (getting impatient): What is it you want, Glo?

Gloria: I was getting to that... it's been months since Dimitri and I... And I said I was sorry... I was really wondering .... (she stops suddenly, trying to think of a way to say her peace).

Tad: What?

Gloria: I’d like us to be friends, again.

Tad: (in disbelief) Friends?

Gloria: Yes. Before....

Tad: What are you doing?

Gloria: I think....

Tad: Stop it! I can't believe this! You come to my home, you basically insult my friend on her motherhood skills and now you're telling me that you want us to start over? You want us to be friends? You can't be serious. Let me get this thru your head: I don't want to be *friends* with you. Friends trust each other. Or maybe *friends* isn't the word your looking for? What ever it is I'm not interested. Go find another pigeon to pluck, Gloria.

Gloria: Tad, we were so close, we almost got married...

Tad: You did this to Stuart too, didn't you? Well newsflash: I'm not Stuart! For the life of me, I can't remember what I ever saw in you! Your marriage to Dimbo was the best thing that ever happened to me. Talk about dodging bullet!

Gloria: No, Tad, Liza has been planting....

Tad: Attacking Liza is not going to help your case. It's over. Good Bye Gloria, find somebody else to be self-righteous and judgmental with. Maybe Dimmy has a special on comfort today.... (Tad opens the door for her to get out) You can go now...(Glo is out the door) Gloria?

Gloria: (hopefully, turning around) Yes.

Tad: I want you to stay away from my son from now on. I don't want you to hurt him. Please respect my wishes.

He pushes the door on Glo's face drown in tears and turns to see Liza on the edge of the living room. Liza rushes to Tad's side to give him a hug.

Liza: I'm sorry.

Tad: Don't be, I meant every word. It's time to think about the future.

Adam's office:

Adam and his lawyer Barry Shire shuffle papers back and forth.

Barry: I'll say this, Adam, you are a lucky man. This is the last of the settlements... no more Corview from now on...

Adam: Well, that's just dandy...

Barry: Your biggest piece of luck was really Liza's decision not to go after half of the Chandler empire...

Adam: Momentary lapse of judgment, I'm sure. Probably hormonal. (sad smile, reflecting on what could have been).

Barry: So what's next in the war of the Chandlers?

Adam: Did you contact Henry Rosen?

Barry: Yes. The pressure is on.

Adam: Not too much pressure, I hope.

Barry: Not as long as she's pregnant, Adam. I'm making sure of that. But Liza will sense some pressure from the bank.

Adam: Good. Because of Liza, I have lost both my daughters and my son, I'll be damned if she is going to win custody of my last child.

Barry: Your plan and my legal skills should do the trick, Adam.

Adam: Any news on this Thorpe woman?

Barry: Yes, we have find her. It wasn't very difficult. After losing her television station in Dallas, she became publisher of a newspaper in Springfield. Still is. What's her connection to Liza?

Adam: Ms Thorpe is, well, *was* sort of a mentor to Liza at one point. Thorpe lost her station not long after Liza left it for a better job in Connecticut. Liza jumped ship, if you will. I'm hoping Holly Thorpe has a long memory and is up for a little revenge.

Barry (handing Adam a piece of paper): Well, there's her phone number! Reach out and touch someone.

Adam: (dialing): Thank you, Barry. As efficient as ever.... Yes, hello, I could I speak with Mrs Holly Thorpe, please.

Holly (played by Guiding Light's Maureen Garrett): That's Colby. Holly Colby, and who is this?

Episode 6: Sweet Dreams

It's late at night. Tad is in his bed, sleeping. Suddenly, someone gets in his bed. From behind, someone wraps her arms around Tad and kisses him on the neck, he smiles and turns around. It's Liza.

Tad: Hi!

Liza: I couldn't do it. I couldn't stay away anymore, knowing that you're so close. Just across the hallway.

Tad: This feels so good.... Liza, I've been wanting this for so long.... I lo... (she interrupts him with a kiss, they kiss deeply, ready to make love)

Liza (while kissing him): Tad, it's time, it's time...

Tad: (feeling something grab his feet) Time? What time? Liza?

Unexpectedly, Liza disappears into a fog. Tad opens his eyes, laying in his bed in the middle of the night, alone. A very due Liza is standing at the foot of his bed, holding her belly with one hand and pulling his feet with the other, looking calm.

Liza (whispering): Tad, I think it's time.

Tad (finally realizing that he was dreaming): Liza, what's going on?

Liza: The baby. It's time.

Tad (completely awake, alert and aware of the meaning of the words): Oh my God! It's time!

Liza: So I said.

Tad (panicking, pacing around the room in his pyjamas): OK! OK! OK! First: let's find your bag! Your bag, right!

Liza: It's at the door, downstairs, where it's been for two weeks.

Tad: Right, the door. What do we do next?

Liza: Maybe you can get dressed. I'll do the same. We'll meet at the door.

Tad: Good plan. Oh My God! a baby! (sitting down on his bed)

Liza: It'll be all right, Tad. (Liza heads out)

Later at the Hospital, entering the maternity ward, Liza is slowly walking to the Nurses' station with Tad behind her, carrying the big bag. They're arguing.

Liza: There's no *buts* about it, Tad: the light was red.

Tad: Yellow!

Liza: Even if it was yellow, that's no reason for you to drive like a raving maniac!

Tad: I was within the legal limit...

Liza: THAT'S IT! Next time, I'll drive!

Tad: Next time?????

Ruth: What seems to be the problem?

Tad: The baby...

Liza: (interrupting) I'm having contractions, Ruth. We called Doctor Clader before leaving.

Ruth: Well, I think I saw him around somewhere, I'll page him. But first, let's get you in a wheelchair and get you to your room.

Tad: What do I do?

Ruth: You're the coach? (Tad nods nervously) Just follows us. (An orderly brings a wheelchair as Liza sits down and Ruth takes the control of the wheelchair before Tad can get to it)

Ruth: (to Tad) I'll drive. (They head out to Liza's room)

A few hours later, dawn light is coming thru the window in Liza's room. Tad is playing with the remote control, they're waiting for Clader. Their moods have changed.

Tad (zapping thru everything on TV): Unbelievable! There is nothing on at this hour. Not even remotely blue.

Liza: (getting impatient) Will you stop playing with that thing!!!

Tad: What?

Liza: Where the hell is Clader?

Tad: Relax. (going thru the bag) Here, want some junior mints?

Liza: I want my doctor here. What the hell is going on?

Tad: No, come on Liza, have some (pushing the candy). They're good, they're Junior mints.

Liza: This is ridiculous. I haven't had a contraction in two hours. What the hell is wrong with me?

Tad: Nothing is wrong, Coco has decided to pull our chain a little, that's all. You might as well get use to that. (Liza looks perplexed) Now come on, a brand new baby with your genes, the world is not safe anymore...

Liza hits him with a rolled up newspaper as Tad grins.

Doctor Clader enters the room.

Liza: Well, doctor...

Doctor Clader: Well it's looks like we've had a false alarm. You can go home now. (Liza looking much displeased and Tad tired but grinning away).

At Jacob's, two hours later, Tad enters the restaurant looking tired and heads for the bar.

Jacob: God, you look like hell!

Tad: Really? Good, I feel like it too.

Jacob: Tough night.

Tad: Oh yea! Liza went into labor last night.

Jacob: You're kiddin'! Is it a boy or a girl??

Tad: Let's not go over board, it was a false alarm. The kid was teasing us.

Jacob: Oh, well have a double espresso, then.

Tad: Actually, that's not all (hesitating). Jacob, do you pay much attention to dreams?

Jacob: What, like a premonition thing?

Tad: Yeah, I guess.

Jacob: Nah! I'm not into the psychic stuff. I know one thing, you can tell a lot about a guy from his dreams.

Tad: (sigh) Interesting.

Jacob: You've been having dreams? (Tad nods affirmative) Let me guess, about Ms Colby?

Tad: How did you know?

Jacob: Oh come on Tad, my man. Who else?

Tad: These dreams, you know... they're kinda...

Jacob: Sex dream?

Tad: I feel kinda bad about it, I mean, she *is* 9 months pregnant. And well.... I find her very sexy right now.

Jacob: She's still a woman. Is she pregnant in your dreams?

Tad: I don't know, that part is always vague.

Jacob: I'd say this kinda normal for you, at this point.

Tad: I guess, since I haven't been with a woman of the female persuasion for a long, long time...

Jacob: Man, you really are bury down deep in denial.

Tad: What's that suppose to mean?

Jacob: Tad, my man, let me be the first one to tell you: you're in love.

Tad: (shaking his head): hmm hmm. No way. Liza and me??? Get out of here! That could never happened.

Jacob: Why the hell not? You live with her and obviously, you're enjoying it. You come here and all you talk about is her. And now, you're dreaming about her??? Rationalize it however you want, Thaddeus J. Martin but I spell it L-U-V.

Tad: And you're wrong! (long pause)

Jacob: So when are you going to tell her?

Tad looks exasperated, knocking his head on the bar.

Adam's office

Adam is brooding and ignoring Barry Shire.

Barry Shire: You want to tell me who this Holly Colby-Thorpe really is.

Adam: She's the key, Barry, the key.

Barry: Yes, the famous plan, as your lawyer, Adam I hope you know you can tell me everything (Adam nods). Now, who is this Holly?

Adam: Holly Thorpe nee Colby is an independent, feisty, smart and at time, vindictive businesswoman who used to own a TV station in Dallas, Texas. She hired her niece about 7 years ago.

Barry: Her niece being Liza?

Adam: Yes. She's Larry Colby's little sister. If Larry was a terrible businessman and a poet at heart, his sister has all the business smarts in the world. Larry married Marian in college when Holly was 15. The sister never really approved her sister-in-law but recognized herself in her niece. They're very much the same. Unfortunately, Liza's ambitions coincided with Holly's bad luck with her ex-husband, Roger Thorpe.

Barry: *The* Roger Thorpe?

Adam: (nods yes) She lost the TV station because of Thorpe, but she can also blame Liza for the mess she was left in. And like I said, Holly is nothing if not vindictive... She's perfect for my plan, Barry, perfect!

Episode 7: The shower, part 2

After a long day at work, Tad and Liza are sitting in his car, heading home. Tad decides to first stop at Jacob's LADder. They have been fighting all day about an up-coming TCE show. Liza has been tense all week.

Liza: (sigh) Why are we stopping here?

Tad: Dinner.

Liza: I don't want to dine out. I want to go home and relax!

Tad: Chill! I'm here for the take out. I called earlier for chicken cacciatore for three.

Liza: How can you do that? I hate chicken! You know I hate chicken!!! Ever since you brought those damn chicken fingers at the office months ago, I can't stand the sight of chicken!

Tad: Fine, then why don't you come in and order what ever you want, exactly like you want it, since I obviously can't get it right no matter what.

Liza: (getting out of the car, while Tad is grinning away): Oh fine! I can't believe this! I'm carrying this bowling ball and I still have to do everything!

Liza and Tad enter Jacob's and Liza spots the huge banner at the top of the foyer. *Happy Shower, Liza and Little Coco*. Liza is shocked.

The party: Surprise!

The party are Hayley, Mateo, Belinda, Grace, Marian, Jacob, Stuart and Ester.

Liza: Oh my! (she turns to Tad who is all smile).

Tad: It worked!

Hayley: Happy real shower.

Liza: Didn't we do this before?

Tad: I believe the last one was for you, alone, this one is for the Colby bowling team...

Liza (hugs Tad) : You, you did this!

Tad: Well, all I did was get you here. Hayley and Marian deserved the credit.

Later: The group gathers around and while Liza is opening the gifts, all smiles and laughs, Tad stepped away to the bar to talk to Jacob.

Jacob (pouring Tad a beer): Tad, my friend, Liza is a happy woman. You are doing great.

Tad: Is she? Happy, I mean.

Jacob: Sure. And why not she's surrounded by love.

Tad: Stop that!

Jacob: Now come on, Tad, admit it.

Tad: You don't understand, it can't be, it can't never be.

Jacob: From what I understand from your history with Liza, I can see why you would fall in love with her at this point.

Tad: Oh really, and why is that, Jacob Freud?

Jacob: Liza is an amazing woman, but for years, you could never let yourself approach her for different reasons. But when she got pregnant, you thought yourself immune. And you let yourself open, your guard went down. And that's when you, my friend, fell. Hard.

Tad: That's your theory, Foster??

Jacob: Absolutely....(Tad stares at Liza) The question remains: When are you going to tell her?

Tad: OK! What if you're right, what if I am falling for Liza? What the hell can I do about it? She's pregnant with another man's child. She's in love with him, no matter how mad she is at him. Believe me, I know how mad she can get...

Jacob: Maybe yes, and maybe not.

Tad: I can't tell her! It would destroy every thing. The friendship is the best thing we've got going right now...

Jacob: Of course, it could get better still...

Tad: Or worst. And she needs me right now more then ever...

Jacob: Sure, but after a while you know, you will explode.

Tad: I know... I can deal with that.

On the other side of the room.

Belinda: So I heard about your false alarm?

Liza: I will explode very soon.

Belinda: How's Tad holding up?

Liza: He's making sure he's getting on my nerve as much as possible so I won't think about Adam or worry about the baby. He's doing a great job.(smiles and laughs)... It's really weird how life turns out, if you would have told me that I would be waiting for the birth of my first child in Tad's house 7 years ago, I would have told you you were mad.

Belinda: Still holding a grudge way back when?

Liza: Kind of. I remember I was living in Dallas and Holly ...

Belinda: Holly?

Liza: The station owner. She was also from PV and she had a copy of the PV Journal in her office, and I just happened to pick a glimpse at it. The headline read: *Local PI Tad Martin presumed dead in explosion*. I cried all night that night. I mean, I was living a thousand miles away, and I hadn't talked to him in years but still.... it touched me. I thought about all that unfinished business that we had, and how it would remain that way...

Belinda: It was like saying good bye to one's youth?

Liza (nods yes): And with the biggest hang over in Texas, I decided to move on. I just left. For Connecticut.

Back to Jacob and Tad:

Tad (holding his head): What the hell am I gonna do?

Jacob: Maybe you should just give up? Move on, once the baby is born. Just get on with your life. Find someone new.

Tad: I can't do that!

Jacob: Then you're going to have to tell her, man! Sooner or later...

Tad: Later.

Cut to Liza and Belinda:

Belinda: So, you and Tad? Anything serious?

Liza: (not expecting the question) No! Of course, not. We're just friends.

Belinda: Still, that living together thing....

Liza: That's just temporary. Mother just found me this perfect little house and as soon as the baby is born, we're moving in. No, Tad is sweet but, no ... Tad and I just don't do well ''together''... I do worry about him though, I mean he's lonely....

B (looking over at Tad's): Is he? He seems quite content....

Liza: That's an act.

B: Would you mind if I ask him out?

Liza: (trying not to show her jealousy): Sure, why would I mind? I know he likes you... He's a lot of fun....

Later that night, Tad and Liza are the last people in the restaurant while Jacob is closing up, the two of them sitting at a table, silently. Music is playing from the jukebox, Liza takes Tad's hand.

Tad: I think they want us to leave...

Liza: You know this was a very nice.... Thank you.

Tad: For what?

Liza: For making my life good. (holding her belly) Our lives....

Tad: I'm happy to do this, Liza.

Liza: This was such a perfect night. The perfect shower.

Tad: Well, not quite (another song comes on, the Beatles' *In My Life*, Tad gets up and offers his hand). Come on, dance with me.

Liza: Dance? Like this?

Tad: Why not? Last chance to do this as a free woman, come on...

Liza flashes a smile and still with difficulty gets up as Tad helps her. Tad smiles offering his hand. Liza hesitates and finally takes his hand. They get closer to dance, Liza puts her head on his shoulder and he closes his eyes as they dance, slowly.

In My Life - by Lennon-McCartney:

There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain.

All these places had their moments
with lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all.

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new.

Though I know I'll never lose affection
for people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop to think about them
In my life, I love you more.

Episode 8: All in the family

Liza's office. Noon.

Tad is waiting for Liza, looking thru papers, taking notes. The door is wide open and Belinda enters the room.

Belinda: Hi! Tad! I'm so glad to see you.

Tad: Hey Lindy! I'm sorry, Liza isn't around... she had to pick a fight with a producer, she should be here very soon. If you want to stick around....

Belinda: Actually, I came to see you.

Tad: (surprised) Me? Did I do something legal?

Belinda: No...

Tad: Illegal?

Belinda: I was hoping for dinner, sometime.

Tad: Dinner? Don't they feed you in court?

Belinda: I mean with you, tonight, La Cucina. If you're free.

Tad: (stunned) That's sounds like a date.... I mean it's been a while, but I vaguely recall the concept of a date: dinner, movie, adult conversation that doesn't involved a 7 years old.

Belinda: It's the basic idea, so how about it?

Tad: Tonight?

Belinda: Yes.

Tad: Ah!

Belinda: There's a problem?

Tad: No. No. It's just.... I can't. (long pause)

Belinda: Oh! (suddenly understanding the meaning of that *I can't*)

Tad: I mean, don't get me wrong... I think you're a very attractive and all but... see, I'm not....

Belinda: Available?

Tad: Ready. I'm not ready for the dating game...

Belinda: Does she know?

Tad: What?

Belinda: She doesn't know! You're in love with her!

Tad: Excuse me?

Belinda: It's all right, Tad. It happens.

Tad: What the hell is this? Is there a sign in my back that says: Kick me, I'm in love with Liza Colby???

Belinda: Actually, it's written all over your face.

Tad: So I need a closer shave? (grins).....I'm sorry.

Belinda: Don't be. I understand, really.

Tad: Gosh, could you explain it to me? (smiles) I'm not used to refusing lovely offers from beautiful, intelligent women... Thank you for the offer. But I don't think it would be fair to you if...

Liza (entering her office): Hi! Belinda? (Lindy and Tad look uncomfortable - long pause - Liza is guessing what's going on) I'm sorry, I'm interrupting.

Belinda: No, Liza. It's all right, I was leaving anyway. Bye Tad. And good luck.

Liza looks at Belinda leaving, puzzled. Tad looks away, trying very hard to be casual.

Liza (after a long pause): You said no!?!?!

Tad: You know about this?

Liza: Are you crazy? Belinda....

Tad: Belinda should not get involved with the likes of me, not right now.

Liza: Come on, Tad....

Tad: No, really! It wouldn't be fair to her.

Liza: Is it Gloria?

Tad (almost hurt by the suggestion, half hoping that she would guess his true feelings) : No! God, no! It's just... (thinking to find a good excuse) Look, ever since I came back from the dead (grins), there was always someone... like I couldn't function without a woman in my life: Brooke, Dixie, Gloria, with no breathing room in between. No time to reflect. At the Gym, the guys call me ReBound-Boy. And as you can see, it didn't get me anywhere. I need to cool off. All right?

Liza: All right.

Tad: What about you? You look like a person who's about to give birth!

Liza: (exasperated) She is 3 days late!

Tad: I know that.

Liza: You don't understand: I have a 3 day old child living in my belly!!!

Tad: Thinking of charging rent? (Tad smiles but Liza is *not* laughing) It'll be over real soon, Liza. Don't worry. And, didn't Dr Clader tell you that by the 5th day, he'll induce labor?

Liza: That's another thing I have to worry about: by the end of the week, I will have to be a mother to an actual, real, living person!!!! I don't know anything about kids! What am I going to do????

Tad puts his arms around Liza's shoulders and leads her to her chair.

Tad: Liza! Sit! Now! I don't want any crazy talk around here! You're going to be a great mom. And that's all there is to it! All right? And if you need any help, I'll be there and so will Marian and Hayley and Lindy, OK?

Liza: OK! Thanks!

Knock at the door.

Liza: Come in.

A fortysomething woman with auburn hair, wearing a powersuit, very little makeup and a sad and slightly sarcastic smile enters the office. Tad backs off of Liza a little.

Liza: Holly!

Holly: Mind if I come in, dear?

Liza: No! My God! How are you? It's been so long! (Liza tries to get up)

Holly: Please, don't get up. I heard big things were happening.

Liza: Oh... Tad, this is Holly Colby, my father's sister. Holly, this is my very best friend, Tad Martin.

Tad (moving away from Liza's desk to shake Holly's hand): Have we met before?

Holly: (shamelessly flirting with Tad) I don't think so, I would have remembered.

Liza: (annoyed) Holly left PV to go to college when I was four and never really came back. (hoping that Tad noticed the age difference)
v Holly: (her eyes undressing Tad) Well, except for small visits. But I haven't been in town for close to ten years now. But I see the scenery is getting better all the time.

Tad: (feeling uncomfortable) Well... I'll leave you two to your family reunion! Nice to meet you, Ms Colby.

Holly: Holly, please. And likewise.

Tad: (to Liza) I'll see you later...

Tad takes one last look at Liza, unable to read her distress signals, he finally walks out of the office. Holly watches him go with a smile, making sure that she gets a good view from behind. Liza rolls her eyes.

Holly: Nice office. (still glaring at Tad's behind)

Liza: Thank you, take a seat, please.

Holly: (walks around the office, looking at pictures on the wall) Look at you! TV station owner before the age of 35. I'm very impressed. (Holly finally sits down)

Liza: I've had a lot of help and luck.

Holly: We make our own luck, dear.

Liza: So... what are you doing here?

Holly: I came to visit my niece and grand-niece. But I see I'm a early.

Liza: (feeling the baby move a little, the baby is making her more uncomfortable then usual) Actually, she's late.

Holly: Is he the father?

Liza: Excuse me?

Holly: Young Martin? (pause) Wait a minute! ....(with some joy in her voice) Wasn't he the one Marian...?

Liza: (interrupting) So Holly! How's Blake?

Holly: (annoyed at the mention of her daughter's name,) She's fine (coldly). She says hello.

Liza: (seeing that she's scoring points) Still working for Roger?

Holly: (just a hint malicious) Still daddy's little girl. What can I say, she's a Colby! But you'll find out all about that soon enough.

Liza: Not if I can help it.

Holly: You can't. It's in the Colby genes. As I remember, you and Larry were inseparable. I was the same with my father. Blake is the same with Roger, and this little girl will.... (ironic smile - pause) Well, it's something to look forward to.

Liza realizes the accuracy of Holly's analysis and her mothering anxieties resurface. Thankfully, Rudy gets his head thru the doorway.

Rudy: Liza, there's a Mr Flanders on the phone, he says it's about today's show.

Holly: (gets up) I'll leave you to your business. I took a room at the Valley Inn. There's more to talk about, don't you think? Good bye Liza.

Holly gets up and leaves. Liza is left with her thought on Holly's visit. She takes her phone and feel a small twinge in the lower part of her belly. She stops a moment to take a breather and gets back to business.

Liza: Ned, Hi!.....

Cut to later at the Valley Inn bar, Holly enters and takes a seat at the bar.

Holly: Margarita, please. Lime. And don't be shy on the salt.

Adam enters the bar, right behind her and spots her right away, he sits right beside her.

Adam: (to the bartender) Vodka on the rocks, please. (pause - playing with the bar nuts, looking over at Holly) I've done some research on the Pine Valley Colbys, you know. I hear Blake Colby was a great man. (Holly perks up at the mention of her father's name. She recognizes Adam) A good businessman, a real leader, he was even the mayor of this little town. Unfortunately, he died before his time.

Holly: Adam Chandler, I presume. You know, you look much older in those tabloid pictures. Plastic surgery, maybe? I guess marrying a woman half your age can do that to a man.

Adam: (amused) Ha! I can see where Liza gets her sardonic sense of humor.

Holly: (unamused) What do you want?

Adam: How would you like to own a television station?

Episode 9: The show of shows

The Cutting Edge studio.

Liza is taking notes while the crew is busy getting ready for the show. Liza suddenly drops her pen and grabs the coffee table in front of her, her face in great pain. The pain stops just as fast as Liza breathes easier again.

Rudy: Liza? (Liza surprised) Your pen? You dropped your pen. (Rudy hands her the pen)

Liza: Right. Thank you, Rudy. (Rudy runs off. Liza takes her belly) Come on, sweetie, just hold on for two hours, just more two hours.

Tad enters the studio with his guests.

Tad: Liza! Hi! (as Tad gets closer to Liza he notices her pale face) Are you all right?

Liza: Never better. (to one of the guests) Hello, I'm Liza Colby.

Tad: I'm sorry, Liza, this is Vicki Lord-Carpenter, from Llanview. Mrs Carpenter, this is my boss and owner of this station, Liza Colby.

Vicki: Nice to meet you.

Liza: Likewise.

Tad: And of course, you know Janet.

Liza: (shakes her hand) Janet, Hi! I'm so glad that you accepted to do this show. It's an important show. It will show that mental illness can be cured.

Vicki: Well, I was a little hesitant at first. But your host, here, is very persuasive. I couldn't say no. And he came with a very good recommendation from my oldest son, Kevin.

Liza: Yes, Tad can be very convincing.

Rudy interrupts.

Rudy: I'm sorry, but we have to get the guests to make up right away.

Tad: Yes, thank you Rudy. (Rudy takes Janet and Vicki away) Are you sure you're OK? You look a little pale.

Getting down to business....

Liza: I'm fine. Now, about today's show....

Tad: Forget it! I already read your memo and I am not going to ask them those questions about their killings!

Liza: And why the hell not?

Tad: Because.... Because it would be like ambushing them.

Liza: It's not like it's not already on public record.

Tad: Maybe, but I told them that the show is about recovery. Not their crimes!

Liza: Their crimes is background information. The audience wants those questions answer. They're expecting it. And we can't disappoint!

Tad: Why are you so gun-ho about this?

Liza: Look, for a month now, I've been receiving phone calls from a very nervous bank manager who wants to know where the next payment is going to come from now that my last name isn't Chandler anymore. Rosen wants to see numbers, big numbers. He doesn't care if it's sweeps or not!

Tad: It's getting that serious?

Liza: I don't know, it's just....

Rudy interrupts: Tad, you're next in make up.

Tad (to Liza): Fine, I'll do this: but I won't get into this right away, just to make sure that they don't walk out on me at the very beginning of the show.

Liza: Fine.

Tad walks away with Rudy and Liza has another small contraction, trying to be as discreet as possible, she holds on to her chair, breathing hard.

Liza: (to the baby) Don't do this to me, all right? Hold on. What time is it? (pause, she looks at her watch) They're 20 minutes apart. We'll be all right. Sweetheart, I just need 90 minutes, OK?

Later: The Cutting Edge show has started and Tad is interviewing his guests, Liza is watching the monitor in the studio after being helped to her chair by Rudy.

Tad: Now, Mrs Carpenter, there were grave consequences to multiple personalities disorder, were there not? (long pause, Vicki is stunned by the question)

A loud scream suddenly breaks off the heavy silence as everyone's eyes turn to Liza. Tad runs off to her immediately. The cameras follow him.

Tad (rushing to Liza) Liza!!!! Rudy, call an ambulance! Liza?? Is it the baby? (Liza nods, breathing hard)

Tad takes Liza to the stage's floor.

Tad: Janet, can you hand me that cushion? (Janet does) Thank you. Rudy, turn off those cameras, go to a PA or something.

Liza: NO! Keep rolling.

Tad: Liza!

Liza: (breathing hard) If it was ..... anyone else, .... do you really think I would turn ..... off the cameras?

Tad (sighs): Honey, are you sure about this? (Liza nods yes - Tad pauses and smiles at her, stroking her cheek gently, admiring her gut instinct) All right people, you heard the boss! Keep rolling and let's make a great video for baby Coco to see when she's older. Rudy, where's that ambulance???

Rudy (on the phone): It's coming.

Liza: I don't think, it'll be here on time, Tad (Liza screams and doubles up in pain from another contraction).

Tad: Remember the class, Liza, OK? Just breathe: hee-hee-hee (Liza follows his lead) Good, good!

Liza: I need to push. Tad, the baby...(another contraction)

Janet: Can we do something?

Tad: (trying to read Liza's eyes) Looks like little Coco wants to make her entrance right now, eh? (Liza nods) OK, lets get into cliches: I need boiled water, clean towels and something sterilized to cut the cord. And Rudy, get in touch with Dr Cladder or any doctor will do at PVH. Put him on the air, all right?

People move around, to get what's needed. Tad moves closer to Liza's face and caresses her forehead.

T (whispering): I think we got ourselves a true Colby, here. The kid is going to pull a 50 share on her very first show. All we got to do is stay calm, OK? You'll do just fine, OK? Trust me.

Liza nods and reacts to another contraction. She starts to push as Tad takes position to receive the child.

Tad: PUSH! (Liza screams) ...I can see a head.

Rudy (over the megaphone): Tad, Dr Cladder is on.

Tad: Dr Cladder, hi... looks like we're having a baby here, can you see us?

Dr Cladder: Where are we at?

Tad: I can see a head, Doctor. (to Liza with a smile and tears in his eyes) It's blonde.

Dr Cladder: Good, things are normal. Just make sure on the next push that the shoulders are in the right position. Once the shoulders are out, the baby will come easily with your help. Do watch for the umbilical cord so it is not around the neck.

Liza: It's coming! (she screams, pushing)

Everything stops. A long silence fills the room.

Liza: Tad?????

Suddenly the silence is broken by a very high pitched scream, the baby's.

Tad: Look at you! My God, look at you!

Liza: Is everything all right? Is she all right?

Tad: Everything is just fine, Liza. The baby is beautiful. Just beautiful.

Dr Cladder: Tad, cut the umbilical cord. First, make a knot. And then, cut the cord.

Tad: I got it!

Tad very gently takes the baby, wraps it in a towel, kisses it and moves closer to Liza.

Tad (all teary, putting the baby in her arms): Liza Colby, meet your son. Coco, this is your mom.

Liza (confused): What???

Tad: It's a boy. (The studio breaks out in applause)

Liza: A boy? It can't be. Are you sure?

Tad: And oh! yeah! I'm pretty good about these things. (Tad laughs, kissing her on the cheek)

Rudy (comes into the studio): Right here!

The medics find their way into the studio and takes over the procedure.

Liza (cuddles the baby, crying softly): Hi! Hey, so you're the one who's been rumbling around? My boy. (Tad slowly wipes the sweat off her forehead and kisses it) We did it! Tad, we did it!

Tad: You did it. That was beautiful, honey! (to the baby) Hey you, cow-boy, you were in a hurry! Weren't you? Great entrance, kiddo.

The medics takes Liza and the baby on the stretcher and rolls her away with Tad holding her hand.

Rudy: .... And cut to commercial.

Episode 10: Baby-boy Colby

Pine Valley Hospital. The maternity waiting room.

Tad is pacing around the room back and forth between the nurses' station and a door close by.

Tad: What is taking so long????

Ruth: Be patient, Tad, I'm sure everything is fine...

Marian rushes in the waiting room.

Marian: Is she all right? Is the baby all right?

Ruth: Calm down, Marian....

Marian: Tad???

Tad: He's beautiful, Marian, he looks just like her (all smiles)...

Marian: How did this happen?

Tad: I don't know... she was having contractions before the show started but didn't tell me about it. I guess she thought there would be more time....

Tad notices Dr Cladder getting out Liza's room and he rushes to him.

Tad: Dr Cladder? How is she?

Dr Clader: She's fine, perfect. And so is the baby. (Marian and Tad both sigh in relief). Tad, she wants to see you.

Tad without hesitation enters the room as Adam gets to the nurses' station.

Liza is holding the baby. Tad enters her room.

Tad (all smiles): Hey! And how are my two stars?

Liza (tears running down her cheeks) Perfect. He's perfect.

Tad: He sure is. Look at you, little guy! Coco here is going to be one heck of a lady killer.... Your timing is certainly interesting, kiddo. (to Liza) And you! Scaring me like that, you should have told me you were in labor.

Liza: Sorry. Next time, I'll get it right!

Tad: Next time..... So this is Coco! I thought you were supposed to be a girl?

Liza: Sonograms are 95 percent accurate.

Tad: Mister 5 percent! You know you will have to find a name for the little guy or he's never going to live down that Coco name!

Liza: (giggles) I know.

Tad: Any ideas. I mean you must have thought of a lot of little girl's names but boys'....

Liza: Actually, had it been a girl, the poor child would have been stuck with Coco. I had no idea. I thought of mother or Holly, but that was out of the question. Before, Adam suggested my name but I don't like Juniors. I thought of my father's middle name: it was Michael, so I thought of Michelle, but a boy! A boy, that's easy.

Tad: And.....

Liza: Tad, I want you to meet my son: Lawrence Martin Colby. Marty, for short.

Tad: Oh Liza...

Liza: And it's not just because of you. It's because of your dad too, he's the one that made you into this decent guy. I'm glad you're in our lives. My son is going to need someone to show him how to be a good man.

Tad: (kisses her forehead, with tears in his eyes) I should leave you two to rest. It's been a long happy day. And Marian, she's desperate to see you (Liza nods. Tad gets up to leave)

Liza: Tad! (stopping him at the door) Thank you.

Tad: (with a big smile) Anytime.

Marian rushes to Tad.

Marian: How is she???

Tad: She's fine. She wants to see you. (Marian all teary enters the room)

Tad walks over to Ruth.

Ruth: How are you?

Tad: (wiping the tears from his eyes) I'm great, mom.

Ruth: Quite a day, if you ask me.

Tad: I will remember that one. This was..... amazing! And Liza, she just held up just fine, totally amazing. You know, now I kind of understand why you and dad, Jake and Jeff, you all went into medicine, it's quite a rush.

Ruth: That's all???

Tad: What?

Ruth: No, I'm just wondering if you're not getting a little too deep into this, you and Liza...

Tad: Mom! Liza and I are just friends, and we like it that way...

Ruth: I should hope so, her life is about to become very complicated (Ruth points to Adam sitting nervously in the waiting room).

Back to Liza's room.

Marian is in tears holding the little Marty.

Marian: Oh Liza, he's beautiful. He's got your eyes. Did you decide on a name yet? I don't think Michelle is going to cut it.

Liza: (also in tears) He's Lawrence Martin Colby.

Marian: (smiles) Perfect. A proud name for a Colby man. You know I remember when you were born there was this big battle over your name. My mother wanted her name, Constance but Larry's mother, well, she wanted you to be named after her favorite Gone with the Wind character, Ashley. Larry and I thought you need a name with power and so Elizabeth it was. Larry's little princess would have a queen's name. He would be so proud of you, Liza!

Liza: Well he should be, little Marty here is a big star!

Marian: Well he did scare his grand mother on the very first day!

Marian looks at Marty and hesitates before talking.

Liza: Mother?

Marian: Liza, darling, he's in the waiting room.

Liza: Who?

Marian: Adam.

Liza: (turns herself off) This is not the time.

Marian: Oh darling, he is the baby's father, he has a right to see him.

Liza: Adam gave up his rights when he almost killed my son.

Marian: Oh Liza....

Cut to the waiting room: Tad walks over to Adam. Adam snaps out of his deep thoughts.

Tad: Adam.

Adam: Well, Tad, this was an amazing show.

Tad: Yes, well... (sits besides Adam)

Adam: I want to thank you for helping out Liza and my son. Not just today but since....

Tad: She's my friend, Adam.

Adam: Nevertheless, I mean I know you didn't do this for me but still, he's my son.... (long silent) How is he?

Tad: Marty is great, perfect.

A: Marty?

Tad: Lawrence Martin Colby.

A: Ah! Colby. (Adam's face betrays some rage) We'll see.

Tad: What's that suppose to mean...?

A nurse gets out of Liza's room with the baby in a hospital crib.

Adam (gets up followed by Tad): Where are you taking my son?

Nurse: The nursery. Ms Colby needs her rest. (she wheels Marty out of the waiting room)

Marian gets out of Liza's room.

Marian (looking down): I'm sorry, Adam, she doesn't want to see you. (Tad gives a look of relief to Ruth).

Adam: What?

Marian: I tried, Adam but....

Adam walks away to the nursery.

Marian notices Holly Colby entering the maternity ward.

Marian: Holly?!?!?! What on earth?

Holly: Hello, Marian. I came to see the newest addition to the family.

Cut to Adam at the nursery, he's sitting on a rocking chair, holding his son.

Adam: Young Lawrence. I like the name, very Lawrence of Arabia-esque. I got great plans for you, son. Very soon, it's going to be just you and me, out to conquer the world. I promise you, my son. You will have the world, I'll make sure of that! This time, I won't let anyone get between my child and me.

Adam spies Holly at the window of the nursery. He gets up, and puts little Marty in his crib to join Holly.

Holly (looking at the babies with a sad smile): Congratulations, Adam. A son, you must be so proud (she says with a touch of irony).

Adam: His name is Lawrence. He is just beautiful. (sigh) My son.

Holly: Lawrence! Liza's choice, no doubt.

Adam: Are you ready for phase 2?

Holly: I've been ready for 7 years.

Adam: Good. Good. We'll give her a sense of security first, and then.....

Episode 11: The Homecoming

Scene 1: Liza's new house. Liza gave birth a couple of weeks ago, recuperated at Tad's, waiting for her new house to be ready.

Marian is giving Holly and Hayley the tour of Liza's new house. It's a two floors home. The ladies arrive in the living room and a huge banner is welcoming home Liza and Marty.

Marian: So you see this is a very practical home.

Hayley: It's rather large. 4 rooms?

Marian: Well darling, there's Liza's room, little Martin's, the room downstairs will serve as Liza's study and/or a guest room and....

Holly: Your room? (mucking her) Or shall I call it the exercise room?

Marian: Why yes. Liza asked me to live with her son and her, just for a little while... up until things get settle.

Hayley: (running interference) Well it's a lovely home, my little brother will be very happy here.

Holly: Well, Liza grew up in the same neighborhood, and we all know what a happy childhood that was, (to Marian) don't we dear?

Marian: Is that Liza's car, I hear?

Outside, in Liza's car.

Tad (in the driver's seat): Are you sure you want to do this?

Liza (looking a bit nervous): Yes. Yes. It's time.

Tad: You don't have to. I mean, Jamie and I would just love to have you and Marty home all the time. The house is going to be so empty without you two.

Liza: It's time, Tad. I mean I really appreciate what you and Jamie have been doing, but I think we agreed on this.

Tad: I know, I know.... it's just...

Liza: What?

Tad: (wanting desperately to tell her how he feels) You're right. I'm sorry. Let's go, Marian is waiting. I'll get Marty! (with a sad smile)

As Liza opens the door of her new house and is surprised by the welcome wagon.

Later on, Tad is upstairs in Marty's room, watching the boy sleep, imagining on how his life could be if he had told Liza...

Liza: (very quietly) Is he sleeping?

Tad: Well . . . like a baby. He's so quiet.

Liza: I know. I'm in awe.

Tad: He almost slept thru the whole night last night. I'm gonna miss him... and you!

Liza puts her hand on Tad's shoulder, electricity goes thru Tad's body, they both try to ignore it.

Liza: Even the midnight feeding? The crying at 3? The diaper changing at 4...?

Tad: Especially the diaper changing at 4 (they giggle). No, I loved every minute of it, I would get up in the middle of the night just to watch you take care of him. I’d get up in the middle of the night to take care of him but you would always beat me to it. It was the best scene I could ever see.

Liza: We'll be fine, Tad. You don't have to worry.

Tad: I like worrying. I've been worrying for the last six months, it's a hard habit to break.

Liza takes one look at Tad and lovingly gives him a big huge. Tad closes his eyes wishing it could last forever.

Liza: (still hugging Tad) Thank you. For all this. For being the best friend anyone can have. I wish, I wish you wouldn't be so sad. You're not rid of me yet! I mean, you know, I'm going to be calling you all the time to work on this house.

Tad: You just try to stop me.

End of scene one.

Weeks later:

[Marty is now 6 weeks old, some weird sexual tension has been invading Tad and Liza's relationship at the office. Tad tried to keep his distance from Liza's home, as much as he could. He rarely visits her, trying to give her some space and some time alone with Marty. Liza is restless with Tad's absence from her life. Finally, Liza asks Tad to drop by the house. She says she has plumbing problems at the house.]

Scene 2: Liza's kitchen.

Tad and Liza have been standing in her kitchen talking about an upcoming show, finally Tad gets around to finishing up the work he's been doing on Liza's kitchen faucet. Tad turns around.

Liza (appreciating the view from behind): I really appreciate you doing this.

Tad: Are you kidding? This is nothing! After what we've been thru? Besides, I meant what I said, if you need me, I'm there... (he turns to give her a great big smile)

Liza gets an overpowering urge to kiss him. But then she thinks, what would that lead to? We're at a good place right now. Maybe we should just be satisfied with this . . . satisfied . . . that's a word she hasn't been able to use much lately. She looks at Tad in his jeans and pale blue denim shirt, unbuttoned at the neck, sleeves rolled up, she starts to fantasize about unbuttoning the next button . . .

Tad: (makes a decision) Okay. Let's do it.

Liza: (startled, she thinks he was reading her mind) Do it?

Tad: Yeah. The show. I can start the research... Scott could help out.

Liza: (relieved) Of course. . . The show. . . good . . . that's good . . .

Tad: Four o'clock? My house? I'll get Scott to do some background research. You can bring Marty, Jamie would love to see him again. We'll order out...

Liza: Oh, anytime after noon is fine.

Tad thinks he's imagining the glazed look in Liza's eyes as she stares at his mouth. He turns back to the sink and turns on the faucet. When nothing comes out, he realizes that he forgot to reopen the main valve under the sink.

Tad: (bends down and looks under the sink) Liza, would you hand me that wrench? (Points to the tool box on the island).

As she complies, he resumes his position on his back under the sink. From his vantage point on the floor, Tad can't help but look at Liza's legs. She's wearing a particularly short skirt today, and he notices the way the muscles in her calves flex as she stands over him. He gets the urge to wrap his hand around her ankle and let his fingers trail lightly up her leg...

Liza: I forgot how good you were at this.

Tad: (the line between fantasy and reality is getting blurry) What?

Liza: (hands him the wrench) You're good at this stuff...

Tad: (realizes she's talking about the plumbing) You know how much I like to work with my hands, Liza. (he winces at the silly double-entendre of his words)

As Tad twists his body to get a better grip on the valve, his leg brushes against Liza's ankle. Despite her resolve, she kneels down beside him, giving in to the urge to be close to him.

Liza: (peering under the sink) Can you see in there?

Tad: (breathing heavily as he speaks) Not really . . . but . . .

Liza: Would you like me to hold a flashlight for you?

Tad: Um. . . sure . . . there's one in here, actually . . . it's just that . . .I need . . . both my hands on this wrench . . .

Liza: (leans on Tad's chest and sticks her head under the sink) Where is it?

Tad: (trying to ignore the smell of her perfume) Beside my left shoulder...

Liza: Okay... if you can put your arm down . . . I'll . . .

Tad: Well . . .(her face is only inches from his own) . . . your head's in the way . . . maybe you should . . .

At this point, Liza's upper body is laying across Tad's; she lowers her head onto his chest so he can move his arm, then she reaches her own arm above her head and feels around behind his shoulder.

Liza: (breathing heavily as she tries to find the flashlight) I don't. . . feel anything . . .

Tad: (sarcastically) I can believe that . . .

Now they are staring into each other's eyes.

Tad: This is interesting. ... You know what I want more then anything in the world?

Liza: What?

Tad: To get up. My back hurts!!

Marian arrives in the kitchen, startled by the scene.

Marian: Well! Isn't this cozy, darlings?

Liza moves away from Tad's body and they both end up sitting on the floor, giggling like school children.

Marian: What's going on around here?

Tad: (still laughing) Call a plumber, Marian.

Episode 12: Sexual healing...

It's a late afternoon at Jacob's LADder and Belinda is at her table, waiting for Liza, reviewing legal briefs. Liza comes in. Jacob spots her right away.

Jacob: Well if it isn't the busy Ms Colby! How's the little one?

Liza: Beautiful, Foster! Have you seen Belinda?

Jacob (points to her table): You want a menu?

Liza: Yes. Thank you.... Belinda, Hi! Sorry I'm late...

Belinda: (cleaning up her table) Don't worry about it, I kept myself busy.

Liza: The doctor's visit took a little longer....

Belinda: Is everything all right?

Liza: Yes! Never better. Marty is in perfect health. Everything is right on schedule. Actually, he is just perfect (giggles). Everyday he does something that just amazes me... Mother picked him up at the Hospital so that I could see Dr Cladder, which is why I am late.

Belinda: Are you Ok?

Liza: Oh yes, great, terrific. Actually, Dr Cladder said that I could even resume eh..... my sex life.

Belinda: Oh! (trying desperately not to sound surprised by the idea that Liza might actually have a sex life)

Liza: Yes, that's what I said. I mean, what's a sex life, right?

Belinda: Well you know, things have a way of turning around.

Liza: (sighs) The thing is.... I keep ... thinking about.... (she hesitates)

Belinda: Tad?

Liza: How did you know?

Belinda: Well... (trying not to show that she knows more) let's see: he's tall, dark and handsome, with a killer smile and baby blue eyes. He's fun, sweet and sensitive and you spend a lot of time with him, who wouldn't be... interested?

Liza: And you haven't seen him without his clothes on! (they laugh) (sighs) This is bad, this is bad! This is terrible!

Belinda: Why?

Liza: We're friends. Just friends! Sex can destroy everything, especially with Tad and me.

Belinda: You're exaggerating.

Liza: Yesterday was the worst.

Belinda: What happened?

Liza: He came to my house. I had a little plumbing problem in the kitchen. He just looked so damn good in those jeans! I just wanted to get closer to him... anyway we both ended up on the floor somehow... I came this close to...

Belinda: Ripping his clothes off?

Liza: Yah! ... But before today, I had an excuse not to act on this: I just had a baby, etc.etc. But now...

Belinda: Maybe he's ready for more than just friendship...?

Liza: But sex is bad with us.... I mean it's ''great!''...(her mind wonders) Really great ...(clearing her throat, getting back to earth) but ... you know?

Belinda: You're confused.

Liza: (exasperated) I'm sorry, I shouldn't be talking about this..... but I keep dreaming about how his hands feel on my ... shoulders... He has great hands! (lost in another fantasy) ... and I always wake up at the wrong moment! Do you know how frustrating that is??

Belinda: You're afraid that sex would destroyed the friendship? (Liza nods yes) Liza, I think the question you should ask yourself is: are you ready for a relationship with Tad? Something more than just friendship or just sex?

Liza: You think that's the question? Why?

Belinda: Because (she hesitates).... No, forget it... (long pause)

Liza: What? Don't hold out on me! Belinda, I need you to be honest with me...

Cut to Tad entering the restaurant. He goes straight to the bar to say hi to Jacob.

Jacob: (pouring him a beer) Well, look who's here, the cold shower champion of the world!!!

Tad: Say what you will, but I'll be a very rich man by the end of the year. That hot water bill is going down....

Jacob: You plan on continuing this little game for a year????

Tad: If I have to. (picking up the beer) Actually, things have been getting weirder and weirder...

Jacob: Really?

Tad: Like yesterday. I was fixing her faucet...(Jacob gives him an disbelieving look) OK, I was *trying* to fix her plumbing problem in the kitchen and I kept getting these mixed signals.

Jacob: Like what?

Tad: I don't know: looks, mostly. Anyway, we ended up on the floor of her kitchen, laughing our heads off. Nothing happened but still...

Jacob: Well you know, she's a healthy woman in her prime, maybe she's horny?

Tad: Aren't we all? (taking a slip of his beer)

Jacob: I think you should ask her out. (Tad shakes his head) Nothing dramatic, just a date. Take things slowly, one step at a time. Ask her for dinner! (Jacob points to Belinda and Liza's table, Tad spots them)

Cut to Belinda and Liza

Belinda: (choosing her words carefully) If you want my opinion, I think Tad is more than ready for a meaningful relationship with you. What about you? (pause)

Tad walks to their table.

Tad: Ladies!

Belinda: Tad, hi (she gets up). Liza, I will call you.... Tad, looking good! (Belinda gives a look to Liza who shyly looks away)

Tad: Don't leave on my account!

Belinda: Don't be silly, I have a busy lawyer's life. (to Liza) Say hi to Marty for me?

Liza: I will. Bye.

Belinda leaves, and Liza is left with her thoughts.

Tad: Boy, this was a mighty serious conversation. Is everything all right?

Liza: Perfect. I just came from Marty's doctor and doctor Cladder. Everything is just fine.

Tad: That's great....(pause - Tad and Liza are both thinking about the day before) So? (long uneasy pause)

Liza: Would you mind joining me for dinner?

Tad: (smiles) Mind??? I'd love to. (Liza smiles back)
Much later that night, Tad is slowly walking Liza back to her house, all the lights inside are off. They're laughing.

Tad: I swear this is how the wine business works... . Well (looking at the front door) here we are.

Liza: (taking his hand) It was a lovely dinner. Thank you.

Tad: Please. Thank you, you invited me. And as long as you had a good time, that's all that matters... You have, haven't you? (Liza nods yes, Tad smiles - long awkward pause) ...God! This is so weird! I feel like a kid on his first date.

Liza: You do?

Tad: hmm! hmm! Like a nervous 13 years old, his mind racing, wondering: should I - shouldn't I?

Liza: Should what? (half-coyly)

Tad: This.

Tad moves closer to Liza, gently caressing her cheek, hesitating, staring into her eyes. He finally approaches her for a kiss. Liza feels herself swept away, losing all senses of time and space, putting her arms on his shoulders. She closes her eyes. He puts his hand on her shoulder and she's gone. Their lips almost meet when a light inside is turned on and someone is about to open the door. Tad and Liza pull back from each other quickly at the sudden noise, a little embarrassed.

Marian: Liza, darling, what happened?

Tad (giggling, trying to sound nonchalante): Hello Marian.

Marian: Tad?.... Liza, what are you doing out here at this late hour?

Liza (giving a look to Tad) I'm not 13 anymore, Mother, you don't need to worry.

Marian: I am your mother, darling, I will always worry.

Tad: It's my fault, Marian. I wanted to ... talk... about business, you know how it is....

Marian: Business? (innocently) Honestly is that all you two can think about? (Liza and Tad lock eyes, looking guilty, business was the last thing on their mind at that point - long pause).

Tad: Well, I have to go. Liza, I'll see you tomorrow?

Liza: Of course.

Tad (takes her hand and squeezes it lovingly, he moves closer to kiss Liza's cheek, their eyes lock): Good night. Kiss Marty for me.

Liza (wishing he would stay): I will. Good night.

Marian: What was that all about?

Liza: Nothing, Mother (Liza lies as she stares in Tad's direction with a very unsatisfied look in her eyes and a smile).

Episode 13: Diapers of Our Lives

Scene 1: Liza’s bedroom. Liza is sleeping and dreaming about the night before.

Dream Tad: I feel like a kid on his first date.

Dream Liza: You do?

Dream Tad: hmm! hmm! Like a nervous 13 years old, his mind racing, wondering should I? - shouldn’t I?

Dream Liza: Should what?

Dream Tad: This (Tad moves closer to Liza, gently caressing her cheek, staring into her eyes and finally giving her a very long and sweet kiss.

End of dream.

Cut to Liza still asleep moves on the other side of her bed to hug someone.

Liza: (still half asleep) Tad?

No one is there. Her eyes open. Marty starts crying his head off.

Scene 2: Tad’s bathroom. Tad is staring into the mirror, shaving, talking to himself.

Tad: ''Hi...'' ''Hi!'' (pause) ''HI!!!!'' God, I can’t believe this is actually harder than when I was 13! (sighs) Ok! Ok! Let’s get serious here: ''Liza, I really enjoyed last night ....'' that’s good! That’s good! Establish a base.... (he stares in silence, trying to think of the next thing to say) than what????? (sighs) I know!: ''Liza, I'm head over heel in love with you, will you go out with me? If you don’t, I’ll die!'' That should do it!! (sighs) How am I going to do this???

LATER: Tad's office. Same morning.

The phones are ringing off the hook, and Tad and Rudy are busy answering them.

Tad (on the phone): Look, let's just say ... that you're looking for a better deal? I can give you that deal, you know that, don’t you?

Rudy (on the other phone): Ms Colby is running a bit late.....(Rudy hangs up, exasperated) Where is she?

Tad (just hanging up): Relax, Rudy. She’ll be here.

Liza enters Tad's office with her hands full, diaper bag on her left shoulder, babyfood bag on the other. Her hands are holding Marty in his portable crib. She looks tired and the little guy is crying away. Tad sees her, their eyes lock, remembering the night before, they smile at each other.

Tad (to Liza): Hi... (his voice cracks)

Liza: (forgetting the world for a second) Hi.

Liza gets back to earth the very next second, putting all her attention on Marty.

Liza: (whining, putting the crib down on the desk) Marty, please! I swear I'll get you whatever you want if you give me just 5 minutes of quiet time.

Tad (looking at the Colby combo - finishing up another phone call): Johnny, I’ll call you back, OK? BuhBye (he hangs up, goes to the Colbys) Hey look who’s here!

Liza: Help!

Tad: (hurrying up to get the crib) Hey Marty, my man, gimme five! (he holds up his hand to the baby, Marty ignores him and continues to cry, Tad turns to Liza to kiss her on the cheek. Tad gently strokes her cheek for a split second. They gaze into each other's eyes for a second. Rudy feels a little uncomfortable).

Liza: He's been like this since we left home. Petra is sick today, the flu she says. Mother couldn't stay, she's actually selling a house today. So Marty had to come to work!

Tad: (holding up the baby) Get used to it, cow-boy, it's a 9 to 5 world!

Liza: Rudy, could you go back to my car? I left his toy bag in the trunk. I swear this kid's got more baggage than my mother on a trip to Saint-Justin!

Rudy: Sure (Rudy takes the keys).

Liza: Thanks!

Tad: (holding up Marty who's quieted down) You should have call me.

Liza: (sitting down) You babysit on the side??? Is this your way to ask me for a raise?

Tad: Yes! I mean, no. (grins) But I do have some great contacts in the baby sitting underworld! You know: grand mothers, nieces, ready to jump into action at the chance to sit with a looker like my man Marty, here. (Marty smiles at Tad)

Liza: How did you do that? He stopped crying! Anyway, that's nice of you to offer but I don't mind bringing him to work. I hardly see him these days, especially with that bank harassment and the sweeps coming up.

The phone rings. Marty goes back to his crying mood. Liza sighs, looking at the phone.

Tad: It's been like that since dawn.

Liza (picks up the phone): Liza Colby . . . Mr Rosen! Yes, hi! It's been a while....(sarcastically) 2 whole days!

Tad: (to Marty) Mr Rosen from the bank.... (Marty cries louder) yes, that's been your mother's feeling too....

Tad plays around with Marty to stop him from crying. Marty stops at all that attention. Finally, Tad holds his nose closer to Marty's diaper and winces at the foul odor. Marty gives Tad a great big smile.

Tad: So that's what you've been holding out on us, little man! Time for a diaper change (Tad with Marty gets the diaper bag and goes back to his desk to change the diaper). Come here!

Liza (still on the phone, worried): I don't understand. Why didn't you.....(pause) Can they do that????

Tad: (noticing Liza's tone) Now, you can make any mess you want around here! These contracts aren't at all important. Let me get you into something more comfortable. There! (finishing the diaper change) All dried, now isn't this nicer? (putting Marty against his shoulder, looking at Liza) And you know, the girls just love a good, dry boy! Trust me on this one. (pause - Marty drools and smiles at Tad) We’ll work on that drooling...

Liza: Who????? (Tad moves closer to Liza, trying to read her expression) Hollings? Have you heard from that corporation before? (listening) I see... well ...(Liza moves closer to Tad and Marty to touch Marty's little back). I understand. Thank you, Henry. Good bye. (she hangs up, stunned)

Quickly, Liza moves to take Marty from Tad's arms.

Liza: Come here, sweetheart.

Tad: Liza, what is it? What? Is it the loan?

Liza (hugging Marty): Eh..... somebody, rather some corporation acquired it.

Tad: The loan? Somebody? Acquired? What does that mean?

Liza: I don't owe any money to the bank anymore, I owe it to this corporation.

Tad: Who? What?

Liza: Hollings Holdings.

Tad: Never heard of them.

Liza: Neither have I. (Marty just smiles away at her as she can’t help but smile back)

Tad: Can they do that?

Liza: It looks that way. Rosen told me that they bought a number of loans in PV.

Tad: What does that mean?

Liza: I ... don't know. (to Marty) Feeling better now? Eh see, I told you Tad would have a solution for you. Oh! sweetheart... (back to Tad) It could mean a number of things....

Tad: Like a corporation, deciding to get themselves a TV station.

Liza: Something like that. We're basically at their mercy.

Tad: But don't you have terms, contracts, that they have to submit to?

Liza: But if they want their money back right now, they can ask for it. (getting emotional but holding back so she does not upset Marty)

Tad: Who owns Hollings?

Liza: I don't know.

Tad: (taking the phone) I'll get right on it.

Belinda enters the room.

Belinda: Bad news.

Tad (hanging up before dialing): You heard already???

Belinda: What?

Liza: Some faceless corporation acquired the loan for WRCW. I could be out of a station at the whims of their CEO. Hollings Holdings. Does that ring a bell?

Belinda: (shakes her head: no) When did this happen? (getting closer to Liza, saying hi to Marty)

Liza: I just got the news.

Belinda: Liza, I'm so sorry.

Tad: So what's your bad news?

Belinda: (taking out a legal brief from her satchel) Adam is suing for sole custody of Marty. Barry Shire messengered the papers to me thirty minutes ago.

Liza: (stunned) What? (clinging to Marty)

Tad: (in disbelief) I think I know who's behind Hollings Holdings, now.

Liza: He can't do that? Can he?????

Belinda: I'm sorry, Liza.

Holly Colby (walking into the room): Good, you're here. We have business to discuss.

Episode 14: Where Raving Crazies Work (WRCW)

Tad's office: Liza, Marty and Tad are hard at work early in the morning. Belinda joins them.

Belinda: (taking out a legal brief from her satchel) Adam is suing for sole custody of Marty. Barry Shire messengered the papers to me this morning.

Liza: What are you doing here? (Liza gives Marty to Tad)

Holly: Business.

Liza: We're in the middle of a crisis, I don't have time....

Holly: Liza, dear. *I'm* the crisis.

Tad: Excuse me?

Holly: I am the CEO of Hollings Holdings. (walks around and turns to Tad holding Marty) What a lovely picture. (with a touch of irony)

Liza: Tad is a business associate...

Holly: And full time babysitter no doubt, but this is serious.

Liza: Are you this bitter, Holly???

Holly: Like I said, this is business. Nothing personal.

Liza: Right. Who's behind Hollings?

Holly: Investors.

Liza: Adam.

Holly: Does it matter?

Tad: Don't forget Dimitri.

Holly: My investors want their money back, Liza. For you, that's all that matters. You have two weeks.

Liza: Tad, Belinda, would you mind taking Marty out of here for a little while. I need to talk to Holly alone.

Tad: You sure?

Liza nods yes. Belinda and Tad who is holding Marty leave the office.

Holly: (looking around) I've never seen this particular office before, very nice. Although it needs some redecorating: more white paint maybe.... (she looks at Jamie's picture on Tad's desk) ...And he's a family man too??? Well! Wonders never stop. How does one become best friend with an ex-lover who happened to cheat on one with one's mother?

Liza: Why are you doing this, Holly?

Holly: I'm getting to know my future employee...

Liza: Cut the crap, Holly, if this is about what happened 7 years ago when I left your station, I think it's a little over done.

Holly: You cost me my station.

Liza: Bull! All I did was find another job, Holly! Like the hundreds of people that went thru the doors of the station..., of any station. I think Roger was the one responsible for lost of the station.

Holly: Treachery is the highest crime.

Liza: You think I knew about Roger's plan??? I didn't. Even if I did, it would not be a crime. You could never beat Roger so you're beating up on me? Is that the plan?

Holly: Like you could never beat Adam?

Liza: So you're working for him? Do you know that he filed for custody of Marty today? (Holly stays silent) Of course, you do, that was part of the plan: get me to do battle on two different fronts at the same time.

Holly: (eluding eye contact) You have two weeks to find the money you now owe Hollings Holdings. If you don't comply, we will foreclose and take possession of the station.... Have a nice day.

Holly walks out of the office and walks right past Tad and Marty. She stops to smile at the child and tickle his chin. And she then looks at Tad with the same smile.

Holly: Nice looking young men.

Belinda, Tad and Marty get back into the office to find Liza, sitting at Tad's desk, stunned.

Belinda: Well?

Liza: She wants my station and Adam wants my child.

Tad: Why?

Liza: Revenge? Bitterness? Jealousy?

Tad: When is she expecting her money?

Liza: Two weeks.

Tad: I'll get right on it! (Tad gives Marty back to Liza and picks up the phone)

Belinda: I'll see if I can push the hearing date, to give us a few more weeks and then, I'll get right on the defense strategy to be use against Adam. (Belinda leaves but stops at the door) Liza, we'll beat him, I promise.

Liza hugs Marty.

Cut to the Valley Inn Restaurant. Miles Christopher is having breakfast with Adam.

Miles: I suppose the former Mrs Chandler just received that double shot of bad news at this time.

Adam (smiles) : I suppose so. Indeed. How are we doing on the judge front?

Miles: Your lawyer, Mr Shire and his associate, Ms Kramer have just faxed to me the name of the judge for your hearing. Judge Anderson is a flakey, shakey man who happened to be in great need of money. He will do just fine.

Adam: How flakey?

Miles: Just enough to have this aura of seemingly unwavering credibility.

Adam: I want to win this, Miles. No false move! After all, you stand to win quite a lot yourself.

Miles: I remember.

Adam: Good. 'Cause I hate to lose.

Cut to the Valley Inn bar, Holly enters and sits without hesitation.

Holly: Margarita. Just the way I like 'em....

The waiter looks at her as if to remind her of the time of the day. It's still morning.

Holly: What’s the matter, dear, did you lose the recipe? I want it *today*. He obeys.

She sadly pulls out a Xmas-time picture out of her wallet: it's a picture of her daughter Blake [played by Sherry Stringfield] with her father Roger Thorpe [played by GL's Michael Zaslow], all smiles. She raises her glass to the picture.

Holly: Here's to your darling daughter, Roger!

Episode 15: Judgment day

Everyone is waiting for the judge's decision in the courtroom: Hayley, Marian, Belinda, Liza, Adam with his lawyer Lila Kramer (Dim's lawyer) and Miles Christopher. Tad is away, dealing with the station.

Adam: Lila, you did a great job. Thank you.

Lila Kramer: You can thank me later and it's only my job, Mr Chandler. I think we made some very good points. I believe the judge was swayed by your early retirement commitment. Leaving all the day-to-day operations to Mr Christopher was the coup de grace. And a very good move on your part. Plus, the fact that your former wife is a workaholic, and I think we have a very good shot.

Adam: I hope so too.

Lila Kramer: Relax Mr Chandler, by the time this day is over, your son will be in your house. For good. (Lila goes away to take care of some paperwork)

Adam (to Miles, getting closer): Did you make the deal?

Miles: It's done. Everything went as planned, sir. I hear our honorable Judge Anderson is getting a brand new house in the Hamptons. A beautiful place, it costs a fortune but he can deal with that, now.

Adam: Good, good. Because I sure as hell don't intend to lose other one of my children! (looking over to Liza's side)

Cut to Belinda and Marian talking, while Liza is staring at the bench.

Marian: Belinda, how did we do?

Belinda: Marian, don't worry, everything went well. Judges don't take away children from their mothers, especially to give them back to men like Adam Chandler. We did our job well, the judge now knows all the facts. About Adam's past, about Gloria and Dixie and every dirty schemes, he ever pulled.

Liza: (mad at herself) And he also knows all about my schemes too! How the station is my life, how I was basically an accomplice to a murder live on the air, and now Adam just announced to the world that he is going to be a full time father, giving up the real love of his life, his empire. I'm sorry I'm not so optimistic.

Marian: Darling, everything will work out.

Hayley: Has anyone seen Tad?

Liza: He's extinguishing another fire .

Tad outside the courtroom is on the phone.

Tad: I understand..... The Philippines???? Don't they have phones out there?? (listening) Right, I understand, just give Mr Thorpe the message: to call back Tad Martin... no not Ted, Tad!... (rolls eyes) M-A-R-T-I-N, right. I'm calling for his niece, Liza Colby. Please tell him, it's urgent.

Belinda joins Tad.

Tad: How did things go?

Belinda: They have a weaker case than we do. Things should go our way, with any luck. Now all we can do is wait. (Tad sighs looking at Liza staring at the bench) You should go in there, she needs you.

Adam gets to Liza before Tad does.

Adam: I told you, you shouldn't play games with me, Liza. I always win.

Liza: This is not a game, Adam, it's my son.

Adam: Right... How's business, Liza? (he smirks)

Tad: Don't you have other ex-wives to torture or something, Adam?

Adam: Ah! the knight in shining armor! Getting a little rusty, Tad?? (walks away smirking)

Tad (to Liza): Hey! are you OK?

Liza: (desperately) I lost Marty.

Tad: (putting his hand on her shoulder) No you haven't, Liza. Belinda says that the case is strong. Things look very good.

Liza: Just look at him! Look at Adam, he's gloating. I can see it in his eyes, he's got an ace up his sleeve and it's the judge.

Tad: You don't know that!

Liza: What about Roger? Did you talk to him?

Tad: Couldn't. He's in the Philippines with no phone. I left messages.

Liza: It's too late.

Tad: No! No, it's not, honey. You can't lose hope on both sides of this war. This is just the beginning, the first battle, we'll get them on the turn! Trust me! I mean first thing we do is follow that feelings you have about corruption. He can't beat you, Liza!

Liza: I should have known better. Do you know what I regret the most right now: not accepting your offer to play Marty's father...

Tad: We both know that would have lasted about 10 minutes.

Liza: Well I could have used those 10 minutes.... (thinking, sighs) I've got to call Petra to check on Marty...

Tad: Hey, it's going to be all right. (Tad gives her a hug before she goes to a phone).

Belinda rushes into the courtroom

Belinda: Where's Liza? The judge is ready to render his decision!

Tad: Already??

Minutes later...

Bailiff: All rise! The honorable judge Harry Anderson presiding.

Judge Anderson: Thank you. In the matter of the custody of the minor child Lawrence Martin Colby-Chandler, I have come to a decision...(pause) It's always difficult to chose between parents but in this case... my decision was made easy by the actions of one of the parents. And so, I grant full custody of the child to his mother, Liza Colby....

The Colby side rejoices. Tad takes Liza's shoulder by the hand. Liza tears up out of relief.

Tad: (to Liza) Told ya! (Liza smiles at him)

Adam (shocked, interrupting): This is outrageous! Your honor.....!

Judge: Sit down, Mr Chandler! You are a very lucky man. Lucky that I am not going further into this matter, and you know perfectly well what I mean. (Adam looks shakey) Now, this is all I am going to say, but I swear if I hear of any wrong doings from you concerning custody, visitation or whatever that has to do with Ms Colby or young Lawrence Martin Colby, I will throw the book at you! Do you understand Mr Chandler? (Adam nods yes) That's all. (judge leaves)

Bailiff: All rise!

Liza is hugging Marian and Belinda.

Liza: (keeping an eye on a peacefully smiling Tad) Thank you.

Marian: (tears in her eyes) We did it!

Adam (creeping into the conversation): If you think you have seen the last of me, Liza, you have another thing coming.

Liza: (squarely) You don't scare me.

Adam: Maybe you should be.

Adam moves away and rejoins Miles Christopher at the door. They whisper.

Adam: What the hell happened??? I thought you said you bought that judge far and square!

Miles: (defensively) I did. We had a deal.

Adam: What kind of deal, Christopher? Do I have to do everything around here???? Just get out of my face! You're fired!

Miles leaves, his head down. Adam takes his cellphone and dials.

Adam: (rage in his eyes) Holly, it's time to go for the jugular. I want her on her knees, begging for a job! Do you hear? I want blood!

Episode 16: V Night

There's a victory celebration in Liza's house: all the well wishers came to congratulate Liza: Marian, Hayley, Jacob, Angie, Belinda, Joe is also there talking to Tad.

Liza comes from upstairs, watching her house full of friends and can't help but smile.

Marian: (spotting her daughter) Darling, how is the little one? How my grand son?

Liza: Sleeping like an angel, mother. Nothing seems to disturb that kid! (she says with a laugh in her voice)

Marian: I remember you were the same way when you were just a little girl. (to the room) My Liza could sleep thru earthquakes.

Liza notices Tad in deep conversation with his father. Their eyes lock. Belinda picks up on the vibes and pulls Liza to the couch for a conference.

Belinda: (looking over at Tad's who is doing his best not to stare at Liza) So?... What's going on with you two??? (coyly)

Liza: (surprised) Us two?

Belinda: Yea, you and Tad.

Liza: (playing innocent) Nothing. There is no *us*.

Belinda: Not since that date?

Liza: It was not... (lowering her voice to a whisper) It was not a date!

Belinda: I'm sorry I had the definite impression that you had dinner alone, with Tad not so long ago.

Liza: It was not a date-date. I mean even if he almost k......(she stops herself before revealing too much)

Belinda: (happily) He kissed you!

Liza: NO! I said *almost*, *almost*! And anyway, we haven't been alone together since that time.

Belinda: So you haven't even talked about it?

Liza: There's nothing to talk about, Lindy. No kiss...

Belinda: (interrupting) But you really wanted it....

Liza: Maybe but.... that was... is just my hormones talking!

Belinda: (disappointed) Oh.

Liza: And by the way, you were right.

Belinda: Of course, I'm right!... About what?

Liza: You said I should ask myself if I am ready for a serious relationship, right? (Belinda nods yes) And.... the answer I get right now is *no*. Especially with Tad.

Belinda: Why not?

Liza: Because. Because I know him too well. I know his faults, his limits and he knows mine.

Belinda: I thought that's what makes this perfect, Liza. You know where *not* to go!

Liza: (not listening to Belinda) ...And look what happened when I even considered it, I lost focus! I almost lost Marty and I'm about to lose the station.

Belinda: Now, we both know that has nothing to do with your relationship with Tad!

Liza: There is no relationship! It's just my hormones running wild. And it's time for me to take control of them.

Belinda: Just like that?

Liza: I'm happy with what we have now. Just friendship. You know? If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Belinda: What happened when you explode?....

CUT - On the other side of the room, Joe notices his son staring at Liza.

Joe: Well this is quite the celebration.

Tad: I guess it's not everyday you get to beat Adam Chandler (Tad's eyes wander towards Liza).

Joe: (trying to get his attention) You want to tell me about it?

Tad: (startled) What?

Joe: Come on Tad! You've been staring at her all night long.

Tad: No, I haven't.

Joe: Let me give you a word of advice, son. Don't try to push things with Liza.

Tad: Things?

Joe: A relationship. She's obviously on the rebound.

Tad: After what Adam did to her?? No, I think we're beyond rebound here.

Joe: So you thought about it?

Tad: (sighs) (finally he confesses) I think of nothing but! ...It's funny after looking for someone ...Dixie, Hillary... They all tried very hard to get me to change, not really accepting me... Turns out this girl I’ve known since I was ten and who used to fight me like crazy, does accept me ....

Joe: You think she will accept you?

Tad: She already does.

Joe: Yes, but she's your friend. Not your wife or your lover. Different expectations come from a relationship. Besides like I said, I believe Liza isn't ready for a relationship with you, or anyone else for that matter.

Tad: (exasperated) Why am I doing this? You don't even like Liza.

Joe: No. I like her... Your mother doesn't like Liza - both of them. Look, I just think that you should pull back a little before things get out of hand. Or you and she might get hurt (Tad looks for another answer) Not because she's a bad person but because she's been thru a lot...

Tad: (interrupting) A lot of it with me....

Joe: (getting on with his speech) And now she might not be so sure of herself - never mind another person.

Tad: She can trust me!

Joe: Is that what this is all about? You want to prove to yourself that you can be trusted?

Tad: No, this is about me being stupid years ago! From the very first time I saw her, I was ten and I knew. I was just too stupid to realize it....

Joe: There's been a lot of muddy water under that bridge since then, Tad. Life is complicated now. You both have sons to consider.

Tad: Jamie loves Liza! And I couldn't love Marty more if he were my own son.

Joe: All I'm saying is just to be careful and patient.

Tad looks miffed.

CUT - Later that night, Tad is the last guest to leave Liza's house.

Tad: (picking up glasses in the living room) Let me help you out with cleaning up.

Liza: Don't be silly. I'll do that tomorrow, I have a feeling that by the time the day is over, I'll have nothing but time to clean up.

Tad: Come on, you're going to beat Holly too!

Liza: You got a few millions to spare? (she jokes)

Tad: I'm sorry.

Liza: Don't be. After the week I just had and what happened today... I almost lost my son today. (with tears in her voice)

Tad: (hugs her) Almost.

Liza: (smiles) Almost! Thank you God. ... Losing the station doesn't seem all that important right now... maybe a year ago, but now... I'll survive. I have my family, my friends... what really matters....

Tad: Are you sure you want me to go... I could stick around we could talk strategy or play cards or....(he stops himself before he would reveal what he really wanted to do)

Liza: No, I'm all right... really... you're sweet. I just need a good night sleep and maybe a prayer. A miracle would be nice, but I already got my share today...

Tad gives Liza a long hug.

Liza: Thank you. You've been wonderful.

Tad: Hey! Anytime. I mean that. (he smiles at her) Besides, my life would be such a bore without you in it. (long uneasy pause as they break the hug).

Tad walks out.
Liza: Get some sleep, you'll need it with your new boss. If you think I was tough...

Tad: (smiles) I'll pray for a miracle. (He naturally approaches her to kiss her, their eyes lock, he hesitates and finally Tad gives her a peck on the cheek, he caresses the cheek slightly, they smile) Good night Liza Colby.

Tad walks away.

Liza: (looks at him feeling very sorry that he didn't kiss for real, she whispers) Good night Tad Martin.... (She says with a shy smile and then closes the door)

Episode 17: Winner takes all

It's morning in Liza's house and still in her bathrobe, Liza walks into Marty's nursery. Marty is awake and playing in his crib. His face lights up when he sees his mother.

Liza: (all smiles) Hi!!! Well, aren't we quiet this morning? hey? (she takes him in her arms and kisses his forehead, he smiles back) Oh! Sweetheart, I love you so much.... You know what? Today, mommy is going to come home early and we'll make an outing of it! Is that all right? Maybe the park? Would you like that? You don't have to worry about anything, Marty. Your mom will always take care of you. Always... (she kisses him)

Marian walks into the room.

Marian: Darling? You're not dressed yet! It's not like you to be late for work.

Liza: (Liza puts Marty down in his crib and gets some of his things) What am I going to do, mother, fire myself for tardiness? .... For the first time ever, I am really not looking forward to this day at work.

Marian: You really think she's going to do this? I mean I know Holly can be a pain but....

Liza: She's going to do this and she will enjoy it.

Marian: What did you do to her all these years ago? I mean it's not like you had any control over Roger. Unless..... (Marian has a disturbing thought that stops her quickly on her tracks)

Liza: Mother???

Marian: Nothing, darling (trying to hide a worried look)

Liza: Anyway, it doesn't matter anymore, mother. It's a done deal. (Liza takes Marty back) Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to give my son his morning bath.

Marian: Liza (Liza stops), you don't have to worry about anything, I will take care of you.

Liza: I know, mother. Thank you. (Liza kisses Marian on the cheek and goes off to the bathroom with Marty).

Marian: (biting her lower lip) Holly, why are you doing this?

CUT - Same morning. The Valley Inn dining room. Tad is sitting at his breakfast table, talking on his cellphone, he looks desperate and disappointed.

Tad: .... I understand (listening) Still in the Philippines?? What is it with Roger Thorpe and the jungle?.... (listening) No, I understand. You still have my number, right? (listening) Right!. Urgent. OK. (listening) And thank you. (he hangs up the phone, frustrated) Stupid jungle!!!!

Edmund: The frustration of the TV World??

Tad: Edmund? Hi!

Edmund: Problems?

Tad: You wouldn't have a few millions to spare?

Edmund: Not since the last time I checked my bank account.

Tad: I didn't think so.

Edmund: What's going on?

Tad: In short, if Liza doesn't come up with a few millions today, she will lose the station.

Edmund: You're kidding?

Tad: I wish. An investment corporation called Hollings - does that ring a bell? (Edmund shakes no) - Hollings acquired her loan for the station, they want the whole thing now, which of course, she doesn't have.

Edmund: Adam?

Tad: If it smells like a pig....

Edmund: Would the new owners be willing to keep Liza as the station manager? She's not exactly an amateur in this business.

Tad: I doubt it. Hollings is headed by Liza's aunt, Holly Colby and she's in major revenge mode right now.

Edmund: Revenge?? Why?

Tad: Good question.

Edmund: Her aunt? Why have enemies when you have family? So Liza could be leaving town soon?

Tad: (A look of panic comes across his eyes) I don't think so, I mean if she were to leave Pine Valley and take Marty with her, Adam would give her another custody battle and she doesn't want that.

Edmund: Still. Liza has to make a living, I can't see her baking cookies 'till the kid hits 18.

Tad: What about Tempo? Liza is brilliant and she's a great writer and she did train in journalism.

Edmund: But it's not television.

Tad: But she's still a great journalist, who knows a good story when she sees one and holds on to it like a dog with a bone. She has a knack for a good story.

Edmund: Tempo could use someone like... And since Adam doesn't own Tempo anymore, I'm sure she would appreciate the independence.

Tad: More than you know.

Edmund: You think she might be interested?

Tad: Absolutely.

Edmund: Look, let me discuss this with Brooke and maybe we could do some business? All right?

Tad: Just don't tell Liza that it was my idea, she's also very proud....

Edmund: No problem, Tad... I have to go, see ya!

Edmund leaves a less worried Tad.

CUT - Later that morning. Liza's WRCW's office.

Holly sits in Liza's chair, swirling, her eyes wonders. Liza's desk is clear of anything personal. A few piece of paper lay about. Holly wears a peaceful, reserved smile on her face, but soon she turns stoic again as she spots a framed picture hidden behind books on the mantle. It's a picture of Liza with Marian who is holding baby Marty. Holly takes it and observes it intensely, her eyes turn to ice. Liza walks into her office and stops cold when she sees Holly.

Holly: Well, I didn't think you'd show up.

Liza: Why not, it's still my office?

Holly: For about 5 minutes. Do you have what my investors are asking for?

Liza: No. (Liza notices the frame that Holly is still holding)

Holly: Good. Rudy hasn't packed your things for nothing. They're at the entrance desk. You can give me your keys and pass, right now. And sign here (she points to some legal papers - Liza drops her keys and her pass, signs the papers) ...Good girl.

Liza: The picture. I want the picture.

Holly: (with all the sarcasm she can gather) You know, I know how you feel. I empathize. Really. (smiles) Congratulate me, dear, I now have a television station.

Liza: You can tell Adam to go to hell. I'm not leaving this town. I may not have this station but I still have my family, my friends and my son. And there's nothing you or he can do about that.... (Liza walks out, her head held high)

Holly: Don't let the door hit you on the way out.... (pause) Let's see what we can do about the friends part. (She takes her phones and waits for an answer) Iris? Please locate Tad Martin for me....

Episode 18: Daddy's little girl

Holly is sitting in Tad's office, admiring the pictures on his desk. They're mostly pictures of Jamie. But one of the pictures, slightly tucked away catches her eyes, it's a photo of Liza with Marty in her arms. Holly hints a faint smile. Tad enters his office.

Holly: (without turning around) You're late.

Tad is startled and goes back to his door to check the name on it. It still reads *Tad Martin*.

Tad: Well, you know how it is, time is relative. All you know all about relatives, don't you Holly?

Holly: (she turns to him wearing the same smile) Iris has been paging you for more then 30 minutes now. I expect you to at least be polite and answer your pager.

Tad: I'm sorry, let me introduce myself: Tad Martin, *not* your lap dog. So you might as well stop the whistling.

Holly: (gets up and slyly approaches Tad) But, Tad, you might enjoy my lap...

Tad: (smiles at the come-on) What do you want? (Holly gives him a dirty look) Let me rephrase this one: Do you have any business to discuss? 'Cause I'm kinda busy right now (shuffling papers on his desk).

Holly: I'm your boss, what ever I say *is* business.

Tad: (panic invades his voice - Holly is annoyed) You saw Liza????

Holly: *She* was on almost on time. Now, we have business to discuss....

Tad: Well that's just peachy (he takes the picture out of her hands, as if to protect it)

Holly: I have plenty of ideas.... For the show, of course.

Tad: Oh I bet you're just full of it... (he looks at the picture) But right now I have other more important things to take care of, so you might want to put a lid on it, I have to go.... Excuse me.

Tad just leaves a very mad but in control Holly behind. She knows full well where Tad went.

CUT - Liza's house.

Marian is getting ready to leave for work, she's looking for something but can't seem to find it.

Marian: Now, where did I leave those papers? (She looks under a box of toys and find what she was looking for. She comes across a gold watch left on fireplace. Larry Colby's name is on it, leaving Marian with a sad look on her face) I'm so sorry, Larry.

Marian leaves the watch where she found it and takes her briefcase. Liza comes thru the door, her face hides any emotion. Marian is surprised.

Marian: Liza? You're here? (trying to read her daughter's expression)

Liza: Where else would I be, mother? This is home.

Marian: She did it, didn't she? .... Well?

Liza stays silent.

Marian: Well, shouldn't you be with Belinda planning your next attack?

Liza: It's over, mother. I don't have the station anymore. And I am not going to waste time and effort on a fruitless, hopeless revenge plan. I'm not going to turn into Holly Colby-Thorpe 15 years before my time. The battle is over.

Marian: It's not like you to give up....

Liza: (interrupting) Where's Marty?

Marian: Upstairs with Petra. ... But darling, did she say why she was doing this?

Liza: It doesn't matter anymore, mother. What's important is that I promised Marty a nice walk in the park today, and I will keep my promise.

Marian: Of course, darling. (Liza goes upstairs - Marian to herself) Well if Liza is not going to find out the whys, I will! (Marian gets out)

CUT - Later on, in the park. Liza is pushing the stroller along on a beautiful early spring day.

Liza: (to Marty) Oh look at that, it's still here! (she comes across a tree with some carved words on it, Liza takes Marty in her arms, the carving on the tree reads *LC was here*) You see this, my daddy carved that long time ago (she touches the tree). Your grand father was a good man, Marty. You can be very proud of him, like I was (she kisses Marty on the cheek). I remember the day he did this, I was 10. I had lost some contest in school, I was so disappointed with myself. He said this was one way to make my mark. I remember he said that all the possessions, all the awards in the world could never replace what was in my heart. I didn't understand him at the time but now I do.... You're in my heart, Marty, and whatever happens, you will always be there. (Marty smiles at her, she tears up) Oh I miss you, daddy, so much....

Tad: I thought I'd find you here.

Liza: (startled, hiding her tears) What are you doing here?

Tad: I ditched the new boss.

Liza: You shouldn't do that, Tad, she's very powerful.

Tad: I don't really care. I wanted to see you.

Liza: I have nothing to say.... How did you find me?

Tad: I remembered when you were pregnant you used to come here once a week, to gather strength, so I figured....

Liza: You know me too well.....(she puts Marty back in his stroller, making sure he’s warm)

Tad: Wanna talk about it?

Liza: What?... There's nothing to say, I lost the station. And you're stuck with a new boss...

Tad: I can handle her.

Liza: That's what I said... You should listen to her, you know. She knows what's she's doing, she's very good at it.

Tad: She wants to make sure we don't stay friends.

Liza: At first, she's going to measure you up, find out what you're made of. She will probably keep you very busy for a while.... well... at least ... that's what *I* would do (she smiles)... it's what I did (Tad smiles back, remembering her comeback). Everything I know in this business, I learned from Holly. You should be wise and listen to her, she knows what she's doing... (Her eyes tears up, she turns her back away from Tad and he gets closer to her, he puts his arms around her and hugs her. She feels safer. She wants to put her head on his shoulder but gently pulls away instead, feeling that things could quickly get out of hand)... So, what are you going to do? (She starts to walk about with the stroller, Tad follows her).

Tad: (getting the feeling he shouldn't push things) Wait to play my ace, I guess.

Liza: What ace?

Tad: My contract is up in May, remember?? We haven't got around to renew it...

Liza: I forgot that! Boy, she'll be pissed.

Tad: What about you?

Liza: I'm fine.

Tad: (skeptical) Sure?

Liza: No, really. I'll take a week off, enjoy my son (they both smiles), and then I'll see... I'll be better off than you (she laughs). Hey if a man like Roger Thorpe couldn't handle her....

Tad: What is it with that Thorpe fellow anyway? I kept trying to get in touch with him for the last two weeks, it's like the guy knows exactly what's going down and just doesn't want in.

Liza: I don't know.... (they stop walking) Roger is a mystery. The man has been in love with Holly since she was 15 and he was 17. That will never stop. I never saw him when my dad was alive. But than afterwards, things changed somewhat.... I remember, Roger would show up in my life without warning: at my college graduation or at conferences. I would get some award and he was there, stuff like that. He would say he was just in town by chance. But then, he would just disappear for months at a time. And when Marty was born, all he did was send some flowers... He knows Holly is in town. Maybe that's why I haven't heard from him since?

CUT - Station manager's office

Holly is sitting on the top of her desk, watching tapes of The Cutting Edge with Tad Martin, her face is peaceful and a sad smile comes to her lips everytime, Tad is on camera.

Marian: Well aren't we getting comfortable?

Holly: (surprised at first but quickly amused by Marian's appearance) Let me call security and get you on my black list, Marian.... (she takes the phone and dials #1) Security, to my office, please.

Marian: You think you're funny. Why are you doing this? Why are you so intend on destroying my daughter's life?

Holly: (getting in Marian's face) Oh I think you know.....

Marian: (getting uncomfortable, avoiding Holly's look) Larry would be so disappointed in you, Holly. He always had you in the highest esteem but this.... this would break his heart.

Holly: Don't bring my brother into this. You know very well he has nothing to do with this. Nothing. (she sits back behind her desk with fire in her eyes)

Marian: He's her father.

Holly: Yes, well... (she hesitates before saying more) She's her mother's daughter, isn't she?

Marian: Why not punish me instead, then?

Holly: Oh it's so much more fun this way, like a two for one sale....

Marian: You're really gone crazy, Holly.

Holly: Don't play innocent, Marian, it doesn't suit you. It never did... How long did you think it would take me to find out??? I mean you always did like 17 years old boys, didn't you? But then, you just had to keep in touch? Or was it his idea? Did Larry know? Never mind, I don't care and I don't want to know .....

Marian: You're making a mistake...

The security guard enters the office.

Holly: My mistake is wasting my time talking to you, right now. I have a station to run. Good bye Marian. (to the security guard) Take her out of my station. I don't want to see her here again, ever!

Episode 19

It's two weeks after the takeover of the station, and Liza has kept herself busy with Marty while Tad was kept busy by Holly.

Cut to Liza is at the Valley Inn dining room alone, she's on her cellphone while waiting for her dinner partner.

Liza: Rudy? Hi! It's Liza. I'm trying to get in touch with Tad. Is he around? His cellphone is out of order or something.

Rudy: Tad is in New York with Holly, at the affiliate convention. Holly asked him to go this morning. Something about contracts...., it was all very last minute.

Liza: (to herself) I bet it was.... Thanks Rudy.

As she hangs up, Brooke English comes into the dining room and joins Liza with a big smile.

Brooke: Hi! Listen, sorry I'm late but Tad was supposed to baby sit Jamie tonight but he had last minute business. So I had to wait for Laura to come back from work.

Liza: Believe me, I understand (laughing)

Brooke: Of course, you do. And how is little Martin these days?

Liza: He's great! He's got the energy of a battalion.

Brooke: I remember when Jamie was his age, he just would not stop eating and he wanted to play all the time.... It took forever to get him to sleep. Like father, like son! (awkward pause)

Liza: Brooke, I'm a little confused... if it's about Tad, I can assure you....

Brooke: Actually, it's about Tempo magazine.

Liza: (surprised) Oh?....

Brooke: Listen, Edmund and I have been discussing this for a few weeks now and... well we want you to join Tempo.

Liza: Eh... I don't know what to say....

Brooke: Listen, hear me out first before making any decision. I know that the magazine business isn't your field of preference but I think we have find the perfect compromise for you. We want you to write for Tempo as a weekly media columnist. Editorially, you would have carte blanche. And if you want to contribute to Tempo with other articles, you're welcome to it.... So, what do you say?

Liza: I'm... shocked!

Brooke: I want to reassure you that Adam doesn't own Tempo anymore. Edmund and I do. So you would have total independence from him....

Liza stays speechless.

Brooke: Listen, I know this isn't the wild exciting world of television but... the pay is good. And you would be able to be home at five everyday. To be with your son. I know what it's like to raise a young boy, alone, Liza.... You could even work at home if you want....

Liza: I.... It's just... I didn't expect this. Why me?

Brooke: Come on Liza, you're a bright young ex-TV executive with lots of ideas to share on how the business should be run...

Liza: Did Tad put you up to this?

Brooke: Tad did clue Edmund in on your situation but the idea was Edmund's. And mine. It's our decision.... Listen, if you want time to think about the offer, I understand....

Liza: No. I don't need time. ... I accept. When do I start? (They shake on the deal).

Cut to The New York Plaza Hotel. Tad is walking swiftly in the Hallway of the Hotel, looking at his watch.

Tad: Where the hell is she???? (He knocks on a door) Holly! What the hell is taking so long?

Holly opens the door to reveal herself in a black negligee. Tad just smiles ironically and enters the room. Holly just smiles. As she closes the door behind him, he bursts out laughing.

Tad: (giggling) You know the Colby women should really have a little meeting about this negligee thing in hotel rooms!?! This is the fourth time in 2 years now.... The first time was (Tad remembers Liza sitting in her underwear in the same hotel room - clearing his throat) .... interesting, the second time (he sees Liza wearing her black bathrobe) was (sighs) an eye full, third time (he shivers at the thought of Marian at the Valley Inn) was... amusing, but now this.... well it's getting old. No offense.

Holly: (ignoring his comments) Tad, I was getting ready for the meeting, the press conference.... make yourself comfortable, pour yourself a drink. She goes to the bathroom. And Tad just looks around and notices the perfume in the air and looks at the room's view.

Holly: (bringing him a drink) How long as it been, Tad? I know you're saving yourself for Liza, but a young, healthy man like you can't ignore nature for too long....

Tad: (sipping his drink, ignoring her, looking around the room) This is good (giggling). Ignoring nature?

Holly: We both know you and Liza are never going to happen. She's too immersed in herself to even notice your little crush.

Tad: Why don't I wait for you downstairs?

Holly: I bet you just love experienced women....

Tad: Okay, that's it! Holly, let me make some things clear. One: what ever is going on between Liza and me is none of your business. Two: if you keep on doing this little number on me, I will slap you with an harassment suit so bad you won't remember your maiden name. And three: thank you for making up my mind for me. My contract with WRCW is up in May. I will *not* re-sign with the station and ... well, you (boyish grin). Now if you'll excuse me I have a conference downstairs... (Tad puts his drink on the mantle as he opens the door he turns to Holly) You look great by the way.

Tad slams the door and Holly's jaw drops to the floor.

Later on Tad is schmoozing with TV executives in the Hotel lobby and Holly walks in the room, turning all heads. She ignores Tad and goes to the podium.

Holly: Hello I'm Holly Colby, station owner, manager of WRCW and executive producer of The Cutting Edge. I have a major announcement to make. As you all know TCE has been literally on the cutting edge of television. But now we are willing to push the envelope even further. We are taking the next step: a series of shows on child abuse from all angles. And the first subject will be our very host, Tad Martin, a survivor of child abuse himself and his abuser, his biological father Ray Gardner. It will be *Must See TV* where we are not afraid to put ourselves on the line. (she turns to Tad standing behind her and tells him privately) Pack up your things, dear, you're going to daddy's country. Tomorrow.

Tad: I am not doing this!

Holly: Oh yes you are, dear, remember to read your contract, you're mine until May.

Holly turns to the crowd of photographers and smiles away.

Episode 20: Oklahoma, OK!

It's been three weeks since Tad left for Oklahoma to find Ray Gardner's past. And now, he finds himself in a strange office at Tempo magazine. The place looks odd yet strangely familiar as he spots pictures of Marty, Larry and Marian. Tad looks tired, with a 3 days beard. He wears some simple denim jeans, shirt and a sport jacket in which he obviously slept in the night before. The office is empty, it's 7 o'clock at night.

Liza wasn't home either.

Tad: (mumbling to himself, more anxious than worried) Where is she? Brooke passes by the office.

Brooke: Tad??? You're home! (she notices the bad shape he's in, but decides to let it go) Why didn't you tell us?

Tad: I caught an earlier flight. How's Jamie?

Brooke: He misses you. And you, how was Oklahoma? (she regrets the question the minute she speaks it)

Tad: Well, you know... (trying not to answer, hoping she would drop it) I was looking for Liza actually. She's not home. No one's home.

Brooke: Marty is at Adam's tonight. And Marian is out of town, I believe.

Tad: And Liza? (trying not too sound anxious)

Brooke: She has a dinner date, I guess.

Tad: A date?? (failing to not sound jealous)

Brooke: (not picking up on Tad's worry) Yes, with Edmund. They've been getting along famously.

Tad: (unconvincingly) Great. So how is she doing here? At work, I mean.

Brooke: Good. Good. You know, there's always an adjustment to make. I think Liza is a little frustrated with the relative slowness of the place. But so far, she's been fabulous.

Tad: Good. I haven't had the chance to talk to her much, communicating thru voice mail and all.... Well I guess, that's it. I got to get home, clean up and get some sleep.

Brooke: Listen, Tad, how about I bring you Jamie tomorrow morning. It's teachers' conference time. So there's no school.

Tad: That would be great! See you tomorrow then. (Tad heads out, upset. Brooke doesn't notice)

CUT - The Valley Inn's dining room.

Liza and Edmund are in the middle of dinner.

Edmund: Sam has this thing about trucks, huge trucks, yellow with black stripes. He says it's the zebra trucks...

Liza: Oh! I don't know what I'm going to do when Marty grows up a little more, I don't know anything about little boys and their trucks.

Edmund: I'm sure you'll do as well as me with Maddie.

Liza: Wanna bet??? (Liza laughs)

Edmund: You have a lovely laugh. You should use it more often.

Liza: Well it's nice to be in an actual life, for once, I mean having one. So why not laugh about it!

Edmund: I know exactly what you mean (He raises his wine glass) Here's to life. Mostly having one. Liza raises her glass along with Edmund, smiling. At the entrance of the dining room stands a sad looking Tad who has been watching the scene the whole time. He turns his back and heads for the bar, devastated.

Tad: Barkeep? Vodka on the rock, please. Make that a double. (Tad takes an envelope out of his jacket, puts it on the bar and just stares at it. He downs the drink and orders another one with a quick gesture).

Later on, Edmund and Liza are looking at the dessert card.

Liza: (laughing) I don't know if I should do this.

Edmund: Come on! Indulge.

Liza: I tell you what, why don't you order me a coffee and something sinful while I'm freshing out in the power room?

Edmund: Deal.

Liza heads out, passing by the Valley Inn Bar.

Tad: (quite drunk and loud) I told you I want my drink!!

Barkeeper: Sir, this is your last. You are way past your limit.

Tad: I said I'm not driving, you little jerk, I just want a ....

Liza: Tad???? What are you doing here? I thought you were out West. What happened? (noticing his odd behavior)

Tad: (whining) He won't serve me.

Barkeeper: He had a lot to drink already, m'am.

Tad: Hey, buddy! I am not your keeper and you are not mine!!

Liza: Tad? Tad? It's me, it’s Liza! (she grabs his head to make him concentrate on her)

Tad: Liza? What happened to your hair? You know I just used to love that same hair cut in High school.... (starts sobbing) High school!!! Liza, could you ever forgive me? I am so sorry!(crying)

Liza: (trying to get his attention again) Tad, I'm going to take you home, okay?

Liza goes to see Edmund, leaving Tad in a drunken sleep on the bar.

Liza: (as she's coming back with Edmund) There he is.

Edmund: All right, Tad! Let's go home.

Tad: Edmund, Edmund! I love you, man! Almost as much as I love.... (Edmund gets Tad to lean on him as Liza follows, they leave).

Later in Tad's bedroom.

Edmund: Here we go Tad! (he drops him on the bed) (to Liza) Are you sure you don't want me to stay with you?

Liza: No!. I'll be fine. Beside, you have to go back to your kids.

Edmund: (looking at Tad) I wonder what happened. He never gets drunk, no matter what.

Tad groans, passed out.

Liza: It must have been big.

Edmund: You don't have to stay you know, I could call his father....

Liza: (she lowers herself to sit on Tad's bed) No, it's all right. I'm his friend, I should be here. Like he was there for me, many times.

Edmund: If you're sure... Okay well, good night. (feeling like he just became the fifth wheel)

Liza: Good night, Edmund and thank you.

Edmund finds his way out.

Tad: (mumbling) 'Night...

Liza brushes off his hair out of his eyes.

Tad: Liza?

Liza: I'm here. (He manages to sit on his bed)

Tad: I miss you.

Liza: I miss you too. Get some sleep.

Tad: (trying to take his jacket off, he finally decides that he is officially drunk, his speech slurred) You know, he would come home after school and his old man would be waiting for him and just beat the hell out of him. And then, he'd go away to get drunk. Then later he'd showed up, beat him up again.

Liza: Who? Tad? Who's that?

Tad: He ran away but he would always come back and the old man would be there, ready for more beating.

Finally Tad succeeds in taking off his jacket that he throws on the floor. An envelope drops out of it which Liza notices right away. Tad falls asleep on his pillow as Liza opens the envelope to find an old picture. It's a picture of 2 boys, 7 years old, taken in the 30's. One of the boys looks exactly like Jamie, leaving Liza confused.

Episode 21: The hang over

It's the next morning in Tad's house and Liza is having coffee in his living room, reading the newspaper. Tad is in his bathrobe and still unshaven. Very slowly, he gets himself downstairs, squinting his eyes to escape the sunlight.

Liza: (loudly) Good morning!!!

Tad: (grimacing and whispering) Not so loud please, I just want to die.

Liza: (same tone) Want some coffee?

Tad: Black. Very black..... (trying to open wide his eyes) Do we have to have so much sunlight in here?

Liza: (gets up to give him his coffee cup) So you want to tell me what happened last night?

Tad: (taking the cup) Thank you.... (for the first time he notices that she's wearing his shirt which totally surprises him) I came home early (taking a first sip from his coffee, the hot liquid burns his throat). I was jetted lag.

Liza: (getting impatient) Yes, I guess that would force anyone into drinking a whole bottle of vodka!

Tad: So I overdid it! (finally he starts to appreciate his shirt on Liza's back)

Liza: What happened in Oklahoma?

Tad: (averting eye contact) Nothing. (Liza gives him a deadly look) Nothing that bad! (pause) I got to go clean up....(he heads back upstairs)

Liza: You know you can tell me anything. At those words, Tad stops dead on the first steps of the stairs, he turns to her, silent. ''God, she's beautiful'' he thought. This was the one person he trusts the most in his life. Her words bring him to sit down on the steps. She joins him.

Tad: (looking down) He was a typical Okie boy. One of those children of the Depression who were uprooted to pick onions in Bakersfield in the 30's.

Liza: Ray?

Tad: (nods yes) I met this childhood friend of his. Thaddeus Simpson. (sighs) I was named after him! (tears go down his cheek, silently) Simpson would have stories from here to forever about Ray as a kid. They would go fishing and treasure hunting and just plain hunting. They were a couple of regular Huck and Tom. (he smiles sadly) Simpson said that Ray was a great pitcher, he had one of those nasty curve ball that would win anytime. And then, Ray would go back home and his old man.... would beat him black and blue. Time and time again. For no reason except that he existed.

Liza: (taking his hand for comfort) I know. You told me last night.

Tad: (finally looking at her) I did?

Liza: hmm hmmm. It was sketchy but I got the gist of it.

Tad: I don't know why I accepted to do this assignment...

Liza: Because it's a great story with a great angle. Truly brilliant and you knew it. Besides you had to do it, if only to face this.

Tad: Oh really!?!? If it was such a brilliant story why then didn't you think of it before when you were the boss?

Liza: I did. I just didn't think you could handle it.

Tad: I can handle it!

Liza: (she raises her voice) Right! And I didn't pick you up on the floor of the Valley Inn bar, passed out dead drunk last night...

Tad: (giving up on the argument) I received this envelope (he picks his bathrobe pocket and pulls out an envelope). Simpson sent it to me right before I left Oklahoma City. (he gives it to Liza) Open it! (Liza does to see the old picture of two 7 years old boys) That's him on the right. That's Ray, when he was seven.

Liza: He looks ....

Tad: He looks exactly like Jamie (trying to catch his tears) Do you know how much I hated that man? (sighs) God! it was so easy! So easy... How can I do that now? He's me. He's my son. (burying his head in his hands)

Liza: I think... (she pauses, stroking his hair, for a second she thought in all those years she had never seen Tad this upset, she wanted to have the right words) I think you never really hate your parents. Mother and I.... (she pauses) I really hated her. And she scared me. I thought I was going to become her. But when I came back home to Pine Valley, I realized slowly that I didn't hate *her*.... I hated what she did.... But she was always my mother... like Ray will always be your father, and you never hated him, you hated what he did. (pause) I was lucky because Marian realized what she did and was sorry for it. And she was there. She is there to give me other memories to make up for the bad ones. I see that very time she holds Marty (she smiles).

Tad: (putting his head on her shoulder) How did you get so wise?

Liza: I have no idea (she smiles at him).

Tad: (drying up his eyes) Thanks for the shoulder.

Liza: Anytime.

Tad: (shaking himself up) Now let's get to more interesting subjects:how's Marty?

Liza: Martin is good. He started teething, so he's cranky. Plus he misses you.

Tad: Well I miss him too. What about you and Tempo, and Edmund (trying to be playful).

Liza: Edmund is OK, I guess. But he's just a friend. (Tad tries not to wince at the word, *he* is just a friend too) I think he's lonely. And Tempo - well you know, there's always a period of adjustment. But they seem happy.

Tad: God!!!

Liza: What?

Tad: You hate it!

Liza: I'm fine. You know, I get to be with Marty more often....

Tad: You're justifying it! God, Liza, I'm so sorry I got you involved in this!

Liza: Okay, so I miss the action.... but it's not that bad....

Tad: I wonder if I'm going to miss the action?

Liza: What are you talking about?

Tad: I'm done after my contract is up.

Liza: You're kidding? Did you tell her?

Tad: Why do you think she sent me to Siberia, USA?

Liza: Wow! What are you going to do?

Tad: I have some ideas. Nothing concrete tho.

Liza: So what made up your mind?

Tad: It's a long story... but I think most of all: I missed working with you.

Liza: I know.

Tad and Liza are slowly getting closer, gazing into each other's eyes, he slowly caresses her cheek and just as they're about to kiss, the phone rings.

Tad: (staring at each other) I should get that. (unconvinced, he finally gets up to get the phone, he regrets his decision right away) Tad Martin, here.

The door bell rings and Liza goes to open the surprised Brooke who notices Liza and Tad's shirt right away. Brooke is with Jamie who runs into his father's arms. Tad takes him as he continues to talk on the phone.

Brooke: (entering) Well I didn't expect to find you here...

Liza: It's not what you think. (suddenly self-conscious of her clothing)

Brooke: It's all right Liza, you don't have to explain.

Liza: It's really a long story, I'm sure Edmund could fill you in on that.

Brooke: Edmund knows?

Liza: Edmund helped me bring Tad home last night. Tad was... sick. I sorta stuck around just to make sure he was alright.

Brooke: Oh!

Jamie goes back to his mother.

Jamie: Hi Liza! How's Marty? Is he with you?

Liza: He's at Adam's.

Tad goes back to his son.

Tad: There's my boy! Hi Brooke.

Jamie: Are you growing a beard?

Tad: Nah! Wanna watch me shave? You need a shave too, I think.

Jamie: Yeah!

Tad: Brooke, I'll bring him back tonight, I have another business trip to make.

Liza: Was that the phone call?

Tad: Yeah, something came up. Unexpectedly. But it shouldn't take more than two days.

Liza: Well... I should get dress. I'm picking up Marty this morning... Liza heads for the second floor.

Tad: Liza? (she stops) Thank you for everything.

Liza: Anytime. (she continues)

Tad watches her go up, noticing particularly her legs with a silly grin on his face, finally he turns to Brooke who gives him a questioning look.

Tad: What?

Jamie: (chanting) Daddy likes Liza! Daddy likes Liza!

Tad: What??
