![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Kiss by SueS LIZA: Hi. I really appreciate you doing this for me. TAD: You know you never did explain to me why your therapist wants to meet with us. LIZA (shrugs her shoulders) I don't know. I find it best not to ask her why she does things. I just know she has rather unconventional methods and they seem to work. TAD: Do they? I mean, do they really? Cuz I gotta tell ya. Adam? Therapy? It just doesn't work for me. LIZA: (a little unsure of herself.) Well, he's trying to do better. (Doorbell rings. Tad answers. Lysistrata walks in and immediately lays down on the couch.) LYSISTRATA: Okay. (Tad and Liza exchange looks.) TAD/LIZA: Okay? What? LYSISTRATA: Kiss her. TAD: What? LYSISTRATA: Kiss her. LIZA: (quietly to Tad) I told you she was unconventional. TAD: (quietly to Liza) You're not kidding. (Tad kisses Liza on the cheek.) LYSISTRATA: No, on the lips. TAD: Are you sure? LYSISTRATA: Yes. (Tad gives Liza a quick peck on the lips.) LYSISTRATA: (Sits up) Tad, I'm giving you my permission to kiss Liza the way you want to kiss her. Don't hold back on my account. (Tad and Liza look nervously at each other. Tad starts to kiss Liza gently on the lips, slowly, hesitantly, but as Tad remembers how inviting Liza's lips are, the kiss becomes more passionate. He remembers how he always found her completely irresistible and gets lost in the moment. Liza is also lost in the moment. She is taken back to the first time she met Tad and how she felt. She remembers the first time they kissed and how she never wanted it to end. NOTE: During this scene the camera will be circling Tad and Liza. Also, during the kiss the scene will cut to different kisses between Tad and Liza starting with their very first kiss.) (Suddenly Liza pulls away.) LIZA: I, I can't ... I, ummm ... I have to go. (LIZA quickly walks over to her coat and starts to put it on.) TAD: Liza, no wait. I’m so sorry. I ... (Liza rushes out the door.) NOTE: During this time Lysistrata has remained on the couch and has done nothing to stop Liza from leaving. As soon as Liza leaves she stands up. LYSISTRATA: Thank you Tad. You've been a tremendous help. TAD: What the h*ll happened here? LYSISTRATA: Simple. Liza had a breakthrough. TAD: Breakthrough? More like a breakdown? I have to go find her. (Tad starts for the door.) LYSISTRATA: And do what? TAD: Well, explain to her that ... LYSISTRATA: That you didn't mean it? TAD: That I went too far. LYSISTRATA: Why did you? TAD: Look, there's something you need to understand about Liza and I. We have a history that goes way back and some of it isn't very pleasant, but somehow we've managed to come out of this as friends. She's my best friend. LYSISTRATA: So I've heard. Tell me Tad, what did you think about Liza's first marriage to Adam? TAD: I thought she was making the biggest mistake of her life. LYSISTRATA: Why? I thought Adam and Liza were supposed to be so much alike. You would think with all that in common they'd have the perfect marriage. TAD: That's what you'd think, but you see, I know Liza and I know Adam, and I knew Liza was setting herself up for a world of hurt marrying Adam Chandler. LYSISTRATA: So, you didn't like the idea of Liza getting hurt? TAD: Of course not. LYSISTRATA: Well, then what about your brother Jake? Wasn't Liza supposed to marry Jake? Surely you don't put Jake in the same category as Adam Chandler? TAD: No, but in the long run, Jake and Liza never would've worked out. LIZA: Well, what about Liza and Dr. Kinder? TAD: (incredulously) Who? What? No. My God, that man is in the same class as Adam Chandler. LYSISTRATA: How about Liza and Ryan? LIZA: He wasn't right for her. LYSISTRATA: You seem to be something of an expert on who's NOT right for Liza. Maybe you should start concentrating on who you think is right for her. (Lysistrata heads towards the door, but turns back to Tad) LYSISTRATA: Oh, I almost forgot. Did Liza kiss you back? TAD: Yeah. LYSISTRATA: I thought so. (Lysistrata walks out the door. Tad sits on the couch in a state of shock.) ACT I. SCENE B. The park bench. Liza is sitting. Her eyes are red from crying. Lysistrata approaches.) LYSISTRATA: Boy, that Tad Martin sure can kiss. LIZA (Angrily at Lysistrata): You’re fired. LYSISTRATA: Whew, well that takes a load off my mind. I was wondering how I was going to tell you we’re finished. LIZA: Finished? You call this finished? LYSISTRATA: Liza, why did you kiss Tad? LIZA: Because you told me to. LYSISTRATA: No, I told Tad to kiss you. I never told you to do anything. LIZA: But I thought ... (Lysistrata shakes her head.) LYSISTRATA: Liza, who is Tad to you. LIZA: I've told you already, he's my best friend. LYSISTRATA: Who was your first love? LIZA: It was Tad, but we were both young and ... LYSISTRATA: During your first wedding ceremony, who did you really want to marry? LIZA: Tad, but that's ... LYSISTRATA: When you decided to have a baby, who was the first person you asked to be the father? LIZA: Tad. LYSISTRATA: Liza, most people don't ask their best friends to be the father of their child. Most people don't have dreams of marrying their best friend. Most people don't kiss their best friend the way you just kissed Tad. LIZA: What are you saying? That I love Tad? Yeah, I'll admit it. I love Tad. Everybody knows that. LYSISTRATA: Would you ever want him to change? LIZA: No, of course not. LYSISTRATA: So, you love him just the way he is. LIZA: Yes. LYSISTRATA: And what about Adam? LIZA: What about him? LYSISTRATA: Do you love him just the way he is? (Liza hesitates) LIZA: There has to be some reason why I keep marrying this man over and over again. LYSISTRATA: The reason you keep marrying him over and over again is because you keep hoping he'll change. LIZA: But, isn't that what love is about? Believing in someone's potential? Believing they can be a better person? LYSISTRATA: Liza, the reason your marriages to Adam Chandler always fail isn't because you believe he can be a better person, it's because you want him to be someone else. The only thing you need to do now is figure out who that person is. (LYSISTRATA starts to leave and then stops) LYSISTRATA: Liza, did you enjoy the kiss? LIZA: Yes. LYSISTRATA: I thought so. (Lysistrata leaves. Liza remains on the park bench in a state of shock.) NOTE: End show with Millie's musical montage. |
