And who can blame them the night air is so cold it just rips right through you. Except for a few young lovers and lost souls the Pit is virtually empty. A handsome silver-haired man sits on a bar stool at the far end of bar slowly spinning a gold wedding band on the countertop. A rather gaudily dressed "bag lady" approaches and parks herself on the bar stool next to the man. One can tell by her physical appearance and demanor that she has been well used, yet there is a look in her eyes that says she has a heart of gold. "Come here often?" She asks. The man looks down at the bag lady and sneers. "Hardly." he grunts as he takes a swig of his drink. The Bag Lady looks over at the man's drink. "What're you drinking?" "Whiskey. And no! I am not buying you a drink." "I never asked you to. So, do you have a name sonny?" "Adam Chandler. And I am not your son." The Bag Lady starts to size him up rather carefully. "Adam Chandler? Sounds like a rather important name." Adam is really getting annoyed with this woman. "Do you have a purpose. I mean is there some reason you have chosen me to bother?" "Well ... I guess we all have a purpose for being here don't we. Some learn their purpose early on and are happy with their lives. Some never seem to catch on and they seem destine to make the same mistakes over and over and over and ... The last think Adam wants to do right now is listen to some stinky bag lady prattle on and on. "And your purpose seems to be to annoy the h*ll out of me!" Adam begins to tap the gold ring on the edge of the glass. "Oh! I get it. She dumped you. She kicked you out. She gave you the old heave-ho. She showed you the door. She ... Adam places his hands on his head and begins to shake his head in disbelief. He then places two fingers on his wrist, checking for his pulse. "What's wrong?" She asks. Is the old ticker giving you problems?" "I'm trying to find out if it's still beating, because I've obviously died and gone to h*ll!" "Oh, you are a funny one Mr. Chandler." the Bag Lady laughs. "So why don't you tell me what happened with you and your lady friend?" "I'll tell you what happened. She's a fool." "Ah, I see." The Bag Lady nods her head knowingly. "You caught her in bed with another man." "No." "She tried to rob you blind?" "No." "She lied to you?" "No. She ... I ... Oh, what does it matter. The fact is Liza Colby is going to regret not having me in her life." Adam tosses the gold ring into the empty glass. "So, you think Liza's life would be miserable without you in it?" "I don't see how she can possibly be happy without me." The Bag Lady reaches over to the glass with the gold ring in it. "Well, let's see." She fishes the ring out of the glass and holds it up in the air. "Put your hand out." She tells Adam. Adam puts his hand out, palm up. The Bag Lady holds the ring up high and lets it drop, but before it falls into Adam's hand it disappears. "Nice trick lady. Now give me my ring back." "I can't. It doesn't exist any more. You and Liza never existed." "No one steals from Adam Chandler and gets away with it." Adam turns around and reaches for his coat which is laying on the stool on the other side of him. He pulls out his cell phone and dials the police. "Yes, this is Adam Chandler and I'd like to report ..." Adam turns back around only to find that the Bag Lady has disappeared just as quickly as his wedding ring. "D*mn!" He shouts as he snaps his cell phone shut. Adam enters his home and slams the door. He's angry. Angry at himself for losing Liza. Angry at himself for being duped by a stupid old Bag Lady. Winnefred hurries to the door. "Oh, there you are Mr. Chandler. Mrs. Chandler has been worried sick about you?" Adam looks at Winnifred as if she's lost her mind. "Mrs. Chandler?" No matter how long Winnifred has known Adam the fact is the man scares her half to death. "Umm ... yes, you know ...." Adam hears footsteps approaching. He softly closes his eyes in hopeful anticipation. "There you are." He hears a familiar voice and opens his eyes to see Brook standing in front of him. Brooke gives Adam a puzzled look. "What's wrong with you?" She asks. "You look like you've seen the Ghost of Christmas Past." "Something like that." He says as he shakes his head. "Listen, I promised Tad we'd be over at their place an hour ago. So we better get a move on." Adam is just going through the motions trying to process everything that is happening. "Sure. Whatever you say." He opens the door for Brooke and they start to walk out. Suddenly Winnifred runs up holding a large teddy bear with a pink ribbon around its neck. "Oh wait," Winnifred shouts. "You don't want to forget this." She hands Adam the teddy bear. Adam looks at the bear. "What's this for?" he asks. "It's for the baby you silly." laughs Brooke. "Why do you think we're going over there?" Adam and Brooke walk up to Tad's front door. "Are you feeling all right Adam? You hardly said a word in the car." "No, I'm perfectly fine." The truth is, Adam wasn't fine. During the drive out to Tad's he kept on thinking this was some spell that Bag Lady cast on him. And he had to admit, despite the fact that Liza wasn't around he was quite content. Hearing Brooke's laugh and seeing her smile reminded him of all the reasons he fell in love with her the first time around. And now it looked like Tad and Dixie were happily together. Adam had to admit things were looking pretty good here. Although, he was curious to know what Liza's life was like right now. {Probably off at some bar hustling for a date on Christmas eve like her mother} he thought to himself. The door to Tad's house swings open. Adam and Brooke are greeted by a Santa-hatted Tad. "Merry Christmas!" He shouts as he gives Brooke a big kiss. He points to the top of the door jamb. "Mistletoe." "Merry Christmas." says Brooke with a smile. Jamie, Ruth, Joe, Kelsey, Scott, Marian, Jake and Stuart are all huddled around someone on the couch. Jamie looks up and sees his mom. "Hey mom, you've gotta see the baby, she's so cool." Jamie says eagerly. Adam and Brooke walk over to the group of people and like the Red Sea they part. And there sitting on the couch holding the most beautiful baby he has ever seen is Liza. She has never looked more beautiful or radiant. Tad sits down next to Liza and puts his arm around her shoulder. He smiles at her and then gently strokes their baby's cheek. The baby cooes. Adam wants to feel angry or jealous but somehow he can't. For some unexplained reason watching Tad and Liza together holding their child makes him happy. He's happy for himself and he is happy for Tad and Liza. The party seemed to end as quickly as Adam's ring. If someone had asked him what happened at this party he honestly couldn't tell them. He was too busy thinking about what could've been or had been with him and Liza. It was rather strange. The more he thought about it the more faded the memories became. It was almost as if they were being erased from his memory. When the memories stopped all he had left was a feeling of sorrow. Sorrow for the pain he had caused Liza. " ... and have a happy new year." Adam realizes he's had his coat on and was standing in Tad's doorway with Liza looking at him. She smiles at him, looks up, and points. "Mistletoe." She leans over and gently kisses Adam. "Merry Christmas, Adam" she whispers. And for one brief moment he remembers it all. Adam places his hands on Liza's shoulders and looks into her eyes. "Liza, if I had the chance to do it all over. I'd do it differently." Liza looks at him rather quizzically and nods her head. "I'm ...ahh ..sure you would Adam." Tad walks over to say good night to Adam and Brooke. "Is Katie asleep?" asks Liza. "Like an angel." Tad smiles. "Good night, Adam. Good night, Brooke." As Adam closes the door behind him he hears Tad and Liza's voice one more time. "I love you, honey" "I love you too." And with those words Adam is awash in a feeling of contentment. Adam looks over at Brooke and smiles. He offers her his arm. "Shall I escort you home Mrs. Chandler?" Brooke laughs and says "I wouldn't have it any other way." "Neither would I." says Adam. |
